EFA National Office, Tuesday, 26 August 2008 Equestrians Megan Jones, Sonja Johnson, Shane Rose and Peter McMahon were among hundreds of Olympians returning on two Qantas jets from Beijing, after attending the Closing Ceremony there.
A large crowd of family members, friends, dignitaries, officials and a huge assembly of media gave them a warm welcome (in pretty cold conditions) in a Qantas hangar at Sydney Airport.
Prime Minister Kevin Rudd and A senior Qantas representative greeted athletes as they stepped of the plane. The first to appear were triple gold medallist Stephanie Rice and six-time Olympic rower James Tomkins. Both later addressed the crowd after the Prime Minister, the Opposition leader Dr. Brendan Nelson and AOC President John Coates had delivered their official welcome speeches. The Qantas Choir sang the Australian Anthem and still called Australia home.
Both Channel 7 and Channel 9 had set up interviewing stages for their morning programs, but Equestrian “commentator extraordinaire” Simon Marshall was nowhere to be seen. A good move since his coverage of the Olympic competition get the "thumbs down" and not just from the Equestrian community.
