The new Dressage Grading System
Some commonly asked questions:
Q – My horses was previously graded Preliminary/Novice with 54 points. I have only been competing Novice/Elementary and always considered my horses to be Novice. My new performance card shows the horse Preliminary with zero points. Can I have the horse upgraded Novice?
A – Yes you can. All horses previously graded Preliminary/Novice will receive their new performance card showing the horses graded Preliminary with zero points. However, owners/riders may request that their horse be graded Novice if they wish. This is the only level where such a request can be made.
Q – If I am graded Elementary can I compete at Advanced level?
A – Yes. You can compete at any level above your graded level. It is only if you want to compete in FEI competitions where there are some pre requisites that you have to meet before you can compete FEI. Refer to 1.14 of the rule book.
Q – If I am graded Novice and gain my 30 upgrading points by competing at Elementary and above what level am I upgraded to?
A – Once you have gained 30 upgrading points – regardless of what level you gained the points – you are upgraded to the next level which in your case would be Elementary
Q – Pony is graded Elementary but is regularly competing medium and advanced. Can this pony compete at PSG/Inter 1 and then drop back to Medium or is Advanced as far back as it can drop once it has competed PSG/Inter 1?
A - Refer to rule 1.14. Providing the pony meets the pre requisites to compete at FEI level they can compete FEI. The pony is still graded Elementary (presuming it hasn’t gained 30 grading points by competing at a higher level) it can go back and compete at a lower level after competing at FEI level
Q -What grade is a pony that has enough points to make it graded FEI?
A - Under the old rules once a horse had 240 points or higher it was graded FEI. Therefore, if this pony has 240 points or more then it will be graded FEI.
