QUEENSLANDER TAKES KAZAN CHALLENGE IN WA
August 2011
After travelling for eight days from Beaudesert in Queensland, having a week to acclimatise to the Wagin wind and wet, Andrea Laws-King and Razorback Lovesong competed beautifully to win the Kazan FEI 160KM*** Challenge in a time of 10:50:01.
Their only competition from WA,Christopher Haddon and West Coast Dayan put on a gallant battle and at times were within 15 minutes of Lovesong.Unfortunately Dayan was deemed to be lame at the very end of the 160km, putting Christopher and his horse out of the competition.
The FEI 120km ** event was won by WA Jane Radny and West Coast Natanya in a time of 08:06:04. 2nd place went to Malaysian Rider Sulaiman bin Muda riding a WA horse,Top Fancy Dolce. In 3rd place was Kristina Meskauskaite of Victoria, formerly from Lithuania, on WA horse Deep Forest Hy Light.
The FEI 80km* event was well supported with some first time WA riders competing.
The winning combination was Hanlie Nell on Aloha Tribesman (04:22:00),and hot on her heels was Rachelle Nell on Robmurty Jimminy. Both of these riders are formerly from Botswana. 3rd place went to Janice Raffaele on Morgan Bey, a consistant performer in WA Endurance competition.
The event was well supported by AERA rides of 160km,80km,40km, and a 25km social ride. The inclement weather did unfortunately deter some not so dedicated potential endurance riders!
Appreciation was noted to all volunteers, landowners, officials, and of course sponsors.Without all this support these events could not occur.
The Kazan Stables of Malaysia were majorly supportive in sponsorship, and also being present in the official capacities of Ground Jury member, Veterinary Commission member, and having a rider participate. Thanks must go to Di Roberts for offering her horse for this task.
Other sponsors showed their support from as far as Queensland, Victoria, and all over WA,including many local businesses from Wagin and Narrogin. The Shire of Wagin were very accommodating for the event with availability of services and assisting to clean up the grounds post ride.
The course was agreed to be ideal for the competition so Wagin may well see this event taking place again next year, with a request for sunshine and no wind!
