The Role of the EFA

The EFA is the peak organisation representing equestrian sports in Australia. The main function of the EFA is to provide a framework for equestrian competitions with fair rules and regulations for competitors. The EFA has a number of roles including:

  • Servicing individual members and clubs, mainly through its state branches
  • Administering national rules, policies and systems
  • Representing the sport nationally and internationally
  • High Performance management
  • Communication, eduction and training
  • Promotion of equestrian sports

The Benefits of Membership

Training & Development Opportunities

At present the EFA facilitates programs for:

  • Coaches in the National Coaching Accreditation Scheme (NCAS). Coaches accreditation is available in most sports including:

    - Dressage
    - Eventing
    - Jumping
    - Vaulting
    - Carriage Driving
    - Stock Horse
    - “Non-Jumping “ – incl. Show Horse
    - “General” - combining the Olympic disciplines

  • Riders in Development & High Performance Squads. These State and National squads have access to elite coaching and sport science resources including sports psychologists and nutritionists
  • Judges and Officials for all equestrian sports in clinics and seminars, including the National Officiating & the National Judges Accreditation Schemes (NOAS) and (NJAS)

These programs will become more important as our sport progresses in Australia. We are continually addressing issues of consistency and standards.

Horse Registration & Performance Records

All horses are registered with the EFA for life through their Branch. Horses competing in "official" competitions have a performance card. Some results are maintained in a National database.

Newsletters

The National Office publishes monthly newsletters on its web site www.equestrian.org.au and, if you like, to your e-mail address. Also, EFA Branches and some State Discipline Committees or Councils publish newsletters, a valuable resource for members.

Web Sites

The National web site is a valuable membership tool with access to the latest information including press releases, upcoming events, event reports and results, rule updates, FEI News, contact details etc.

Most Branches and many Discipline Committees and Councils also have individual web sites for more local news, either through this (National) web or independently.

Rules & Disciplinary Action (incl. Swabbing)

No sport can operate without a system of rules and their enforcement. Random horse swabbing at events and drug testing of elite athletes help to create a “level playing field”.

National & International Competitions

EFA membership entitles you to compete in Official and Associate competitions in:

  • Dressage
  • Showjumping
  • Eventing
  • Show Horse
  • Vaulting
  • Endurance
  • Carriage Driving
  • Para-Equestrian

The EFA assists riders with international competitors’ licensing, FEI horse passports, overseas entries, administrative support and also manages Australian participation at Olympic and World Equestrian Games.

Insurance & Risk Management

A valuable feature of your membership is personal accident insurance covering you for any equestrian activity involving competition and/or training.

The EFA also offers risk management advice and public liability, association liability and voluntary workers’ personal accident insurance to its affiliated clubs and professional indemnity insurance to its accredited coaches.

International Competition and Development Fund (ICDF)

The ICDF grants money to projects and events that are within the ‘international competitions’ category and those which further develop the sport in general or in particular disciplines. The ICDF Committee encourages applications from organisers of workshops, clinics and seminars for judges, officials and coaches.

Professional Staff

Staff at the EFA National and Branch offices are committed to membership service. We are here to help you. Our roles include sport development, coaching and officiating development, membership, horse registration, performance records, administrative support, Boards and Committees, communication, administration and government liaison.
