Lucinda Fredericks and Flying Finish take second overall in Luhmuhlen CCI4*

Lucinda & Flying Finish at Fontainebleu 2012
Monday, 18 June 2012

A clear round from Lucinda Fredericks in the Show Jumping phase of the Luhmuhlen CCI4* overnight has rewarded the Beijing silver medallist with second place overall.

The event was the final opportunity for Australia’s UK based Eventers to put a good performance on the board before Australia’s Eventing team for the 2012 London Olympic Games is decided.

“I’ve had a fantastic week,” Lucinda said. “My horse has only been Eventing for two years, but he seems to find it easy. I feel such respect for him. He tries so hard and wants to do right for me,” she added.

Fredericks and her ten year old gelding Flying Finish were strong through all three phases of the competition. On day one the combination took an early lead after producing the best Dressage score (31.80) of the 44 strong field. They slid to fourth after picking up 9.20 time penalties on the challenging Cross Country course but finished in second position overall after adding just two time penalties to their score in the Show Jumping phase.

Six time Olympian Andrew Hoy who was competing at Luhmuhlen with nine year old gelding Rutherglen was in second position after cross country day but the combination knocked three rails down in Sunday’s Show Jumping phase which relegated them to sixth position overall.

Four Australian combinations finished in the top ten including Atlanta gold medallist, Wendy Schaeffer (Koyuna Sun Dancer) who produced a clear Show Jumping round to consolidate her ninth position overall while Paul Tapner and Inonothing rounded out the top ten.

The event was won by German combination Michael Jung and Leopin FST.

Andrew Hoy and Lucinda Fredericks lead the Australian charge at Luhmuhlen CCI4*

It was a good day overall for the Australian contingent with three combinations finishing in the top ten.

Hoy and Rutherglen started the day in fourth but finished the cross country course clear and within time and are now just two penalties from the lead.

Hoy took Rutherglen to Kentucky in April where, near the end of the Cross Country, the horse mistook the question at a ditch and brush fence and jumped down into the ditch.

“He has come on a lot from that experience,” explained Hoy. “I never had to push him today which was a nice feeling.”

Dressage leader, Beijing silver medallist Lucinda Fredericks, correctly predicted she would have a few time penalties on Flying Finish, but she is still in fourth place after a committed performance.

Lucinda made a brilliant recovery to hold her line after the German-bred gelding tripped over the first element of a water jump. “If Flying Finish was human, he would be a really nice, honest person,” Fredericks said.

Australia has three combinations in the top ten leading into Sunday’s Show Jumping phase with Atlanta gold medallist Wendy Schaeffer and Koyuna Sun Dancer moving ahead ten places after cross country to end the day in ninth position. Paul Tapner and Inonothing are not far behind sitting in 11th, while Catherine Burrell and Urzan and Emma Dougall and Kelecyn Ice Age improved upon their first day positions to finish 15th and 24th respectively.

FEI World Cup Eventing points leader in 2008, Kevin McNab is 18th.

Coverage of the Jumping phase, which promises to bring Luhmühlen 2012 to a thrilling finale, starts at 9:25pm AEST (1:25pm local time) on FEI TV (www.feitv.org).

Lucinda Fredericks leading Luhmulen after Dressage

Beijing silver medallist Lucinda Fredericks is in the lead at the Luhmuhlen CCI4* after day one.

Fredericks, a former winner of Badminton, Burghley and Kentucky (with Headley Britannia), has travelled to Luhmuhlen with the German bred ten year old gelding Flying Finish and the combination scored a very slick 31.80 to secure first position.

With a score of 34.80, six time Olympian Andrew Hoy (Rutherglen) isn’t far off the pace leading into Saturday’s cross country.

A 44 strong field lined up to contest this year’s Luhmuhlen CCI4* and after the Dressage phase there are six combinations sitting on scores under 40.

Fredericks has a one-penalty lead over home crowd favourite Michael Jung leading into Saturday’s cross country.

She describes Mark Phillips’s designed track as “pretty meaty. Every jump is big and there’s a stack of wide fences. There’s a lot to jump in 10 minutes. The ground is fast but good, and the rain we’re just getting now will be good. I’m looking forward to the challenge.”

Watch the cross country online at www.feitv.org. Action commences at 9:20pm AEST.

UK based Australian Eventers ready for final showdown ahead of team selection

UK based Australian Eventers in contention for Olympic selection will this weekend compete in the Luhmuhlen CCI4* (GER).

For the riders campaigning for a position on the five member Eventing team, this is the final opportunity to impress national selectors ahead of the London Olympic Games.

After the cancellation of the Badminton Horse Trials, a number of Australian riders who call the northern hemisphere home, revised their Olympic Games preparations and set their sights on Lumuhlen.

Among the Australian contingent in action this weekend are Olympians Lucinda Fredericks, Wendy Schaeffer and Andrew Hoy as well as Paul Tapner, Catherine Burrell, Peter Atkins, Kevin McNab and Emma Dougall.

Beijing silver medallist Lucinda Fredericks will compete on ten year old gelding Flying Finish.

“It's great to be back at Luhmuhlen. The facilities here are now top class with superb arenas and excellent manicured ground for the cross country. The course is big and bold with a lot of maximum dimensions and four challenging water complexes,” she said.

“I have been drawn midway in the programme which I am happy with and with dressage starting on Friday I will be trying my best to bring home a great result,” Lucinda added.

Paul Tapner and Inonothing will be looking to claim their second victory in a four star event having won Badminton CCI4* in 2010.

“Inonothing is looking and feeling great so we are all really excited about his prospects for a successful event here at Luhmuhlen,” he said.

An Australian support team, consisting of Barry Roycroft (selector), Rob Hanna (Chef de d'Equipe), Graham Potts (Vet) and John Pitts (sports analysis), has travelled to Germany for the event.
