Jayden Brown finishes 7th in Frankfurt

Nicola Turner, EFA National Office, Monday, 22 December 2008

Australia’s Jayden Brown finished 7th at the Young Rider FEI World Cup Dressage Final in Frankfurt, Germany.

Jayden was 10th place and 9th place out of 12 riders in the Team and Individual tests therefore putting him into the B final for the Freestyle.  Jayden and Widelo won this test (with a score that would have put him in 4th place in the A final).  Overall a 7th place finish and a great effort.

Jayden says his first two tests were a little disappointing with one marred by a judge who stopped him for an error of course when there wasn't one.

However, according to Jayden the trip has been a great opportunity and learning experience.

Well done Jayden.

The Final was won by Dutch reigning European Champion Diederik van Silfhout.

Edwina wins at Olympia

Nicola Turner, Monday, 22 December 2008

Edwina and Itot du Chateau jumped the only double clear to win the sixth leg of the FEI Rolex World Cup Qualifiers at Olympia, London.

Report includes extracts from the FEI report

There were just two riders in the jump off, Edwina and English veteran John Whitaker aboard Casino.  Course designer Bob Ellis admitted that the time allowed in the first round was a little too short and it looked as if there were going to be no clear rounds.  The two clears came in the last 3 riders in the first round.

“I was happy with the time allowed”, said Edwina Alexander at the press conference, “I had been practising riding on time after I had a time fault in the Top 10 event at Brussels.”

The first to go in the second round was Whitaker and his 17hh Irish-bred partner Casino (by Cavalier Royale also the sire of Clayton Frederick’s Eventing superstar Ben Along Time.  Casino’s rideability may have been to blame for an error at the last oxer.

“He’s big, very scopy and careful”, said John Whitaker, a former winner in Olympia with Grannush and Welham. “He is just a bit hectic to ride.”

Edwina who was last to jump just had to jump a clear round, which in itself was not a simple task!

Edwina will be at the World Cup Final in Las Vegas but at this stage does not expect to ride Itot.  The little superstar was bought for Edwina just one year ago has earned himself a holiday.

Edwina is now ranked 2nd in the Western European League after 6 Rolex World Cup Qualifiers, 7 qualifiers remain for the 08/09 season.

Congratulations Edwina!

Jake Hunter's results AND PHOTOS from Columbia

Nicola Turner, EFA National Office, Thursday, 18 December 2008

12-year-old Jake Hunter is home from his trip to the 2008 FEI Children’s International Jumping Competition Final held in Bogota, Columbia from 8-15 December 2008.

Jake drew a lovely hot blooded Dutch-bred mare however she was just 6-years-old so Jake had to really be on the job all the time. He got off to a great start on the first day riding a lovely clean round to be in =1st place.

On the second day he was very unlucky when his mare tipped the last rail for 4 faults.

The third day was a rest day and only flat work was allowed.  The next day of Jumping was held indoors due to the rain.  Jake was the only rider who hade never competed indoors before, however he managed to jump clear in the first round.  Unfortunatley the mare was a litle green in the jump-off resulting in a disappointing 8 faults.  This put Jake into 9th place and the cut-off was 8th which was heartbreaking for Jake as he had ridden so well and missed out by just 4 faults.

Jake then ran 3rd in the Farewell Stakes with a lovely neat clear round again indoors.  So overall one win and one 3rd place was a great effort by the youngest rider on one of the youngest horses in the competition.  Young Jake did a wonderful job and impressed all those who watched him.

Well done, Jake.

Amy Graham wins the AUS League World Cup leaderboard for 2008/09

Nicola Turner, EFA National, Monday, 15 December 2008

23-year-old South Australian Amy Graham exceeds her own expectations.

One of the bright new stars of Australian Jumping Amy Graham has clenched the Australian 2008/09 World Cup season with 115 points.  Adam Mellers finished 2nd on 104 points. Third place went to Clem Smith on 92 points.

Amy said her 10-year-old gelding Transatlanic had exceeded all expectations.

“He was imported as a ‘next step’ horse for me to gain experience on but he has such a big heart and has done more than we ever expected.”

Amy has decided not to compete at the World Cup Final in Las Vegas in 2009 instead she plans to take Transatlantic and her young stallion Baloubet Australis to Europe to train and compete for the first half of 2009.  Amy wants to compete at Arezzo in Italy and also in Germany before returning in June.

“I feel that we could both benefit from some more international experience before we contest a World Cup Final,” says Amy.

“I am very lucky to be riding such a good horse,” says Amy.  “My success this year should be credited to the support team around me especially my coach Michelle Strapp.  Michelle has brought out the best in the horse and me and we could not have done it without her. Thank you also to Bates and Mi Feed who have supported me.”

Australia
may still be represented at the Jumping Final by Edwina Alexander, who competes in the Western European League, and/or by Harley Brown, who may qualify in the West American League.  Due to seasonal differences both these leagues are still running qualifiyng events.

Congratulations Amy!

Becky Allen finishes the World Cup season with an emphatic win in Sydney

Monday, 15 December 2008

Peter Cooke reports from the ISS World Cup final round for the 2008/09 season.

Sydney Olympic Games Course Designer Leopoldo Palacios again proved to be the master of the Sydney International Equestrian Centre (SIEC) arena by working his magic on the cream of Australia’s jumpers to produce an enthralling final round of the Australian circuit of the FEI World Cup Series.

Coming into the event Amy Graham from Maitland, South Australia was in an unassailable position at the top of the leader table, and the Sydney event is highly prized and regarded as the end of year finale.  With over $10,000 in prizemoney available and all the leading combinations, the ISS sponsored event was set for a wonderful showdown.

There was high expectation that the final event would be another confrontation between returning Olympians Laurie Lever and Chris Chugg.  Instead the eventual winner was the consistent improver for 2008 Becky Allen riding Koyuna Ted who delivered two faultless rounds.  Close behind was the Atlanta Olympic Games Eventing gold medallist Wendy Shaeffer and Koyuna Sun Set.

Becky Allen and Koyuna Ted have delivered some solid performances during the year with a win in the final round of the Australian National Championship in October and consistently placing in the top rankings of the World Cup qualifying rounds, and this win ranks as a highlight in her career.  Commenting on the course built by Leopoldo Palacios, Becky Allen said “I didn’t think the course was as tough as I initially imagined, however Leopoldo again showed that his ability to understand our horses is just right”.

In the lead up days to the final event the Course Designer had to battle some very changeable weather, which impacted significantly on the arena surface.  Friday’s constant rain made sure the riders had to face a constant barrage of water, puddles and inconsistent going which made jumping particularly difficult, and then on Saturday the sun and wind dried the arena surface so rapidly, the Course Designer had to constantly work the surface to make sure the horses did not have to jump out of strength-sapping deep sand.  Overnight the ground crew worked tirelessly to prepare the arena with water, rolling and levelling, and they achieved an excellent surface for the ISS Grand Prix.

The course was a solid 1.50m track with the first line at fences two to three with a 19m distance from an oxer to a wall meaning that riders had to choose to make 4 or 5 strides between the obstacles.  The challenge out-manoeuvred both the in-form Laurie Lever and Ashleigh Drossel Dan, and Clem Smith with Benaloo Dark Ages who was sitting in third position on the overall World Cup standings.

The following fence four, a 1.55m vertical, was the downfall of Amy Graham and the Belgian bred Transatlantic.  In an inglorious end to a very successful season, they misjudged the takeoff and the horse and rider parted company, incurring elimination.

The 4.2m open water followed by 10 strides to the tall vertical Australian flag fence proved difficult for many of the inexperienced combinations, highlighting the need for more consistent water jumping in competitions.

The next line consisted of number nine, a 1.60x1.90m wide triple bar, then 27.5m to number 10, a double of a skinny oxer to a vertical of 1.50m and 8m apart, followed by a further 21 metres to a 1.50x1.50m oxer.  This line proved the undoing of the highly fancied Chris Chugg and Vivant with a rail down on fence 11, as well as the very promising young rider Jamie Winning and Vangelo Des Hazalles who misread the stride into the double.  Adam Mellers on the stallion Animate were also a victim of this very accurate line.

The final challenge posted for the riders was the last treble with a vertical fence at 1.50m set 10.90m from a wide oxer and a further 7.40m to the last vertical element at 1.50m.  The experienced combinations were able to negotiate the combination, however this proved to be a good learning experience for a number of the younger combinations.

At the conclusion of the first round, there were just two clear rounds for Becky Allen and Wendy Shaeffer followed by Chris Chugg and Adam Mellers on four faults and Paul Athanasoff and the effusive stallion Wirragulla Nicklaus one back on five faults and Laurie Lever on six faults.

The Course Designer set an intriguing second round with some very tight options and an even tighter time allowed.  This ensured the pressure was applied for every rider as a steady clear round would not be possible without incurring time penalties.  The challenge was taken up by Laurie Lever, who completed his round with no additional faults and a fast sub 49 second round.  Paul Athanasoff incurred a time fault as well as one rail down to add an additional five faults to his initial five.

Next came Adam Mellers who jumped a first class clear round in a time just under the 47 seconds, which Chris Chugg and Vivant challenged with no addition to his first round four faults in an amazing sub 45 second round.

Atlanta Olympian Wendy Shaeffer demonstrated a very cool but measured exhibition with a clear round but in her precision just failed to make the tight time allowed of 51 seconds and incurred one time fault.  This positioned her in front of the field and a serious challenge for the final rider, Becky Allen.  In a faultless exhibition of final round pressure riding Becky steered Koyuna Ted around the second round with a clear round in 48.57 seconds and a clear win.

The Managing Director of event sponsor ISS, Charles Blinkworth, on congratulating Becky Allen during the presentation said that this was the first time a Leopoldo Palacios course at SIEC had been won with a double clear round.

Despite her final round early exit, Amy Graham and Transatlantic were the clear winners of the 2008-09 FEI World Cup Qualifying rounds in Australia with 115 points.  Second on the leader board was Adam Mellers from Queensland on 104 points followed by Clem Smith (92pts), Wendy Schaeffer (86pts) and then promising young rider representatives Julia Hargreaves and Jamie Winning on 85 and 81 points respectively.

The winner of the Australian League is eligible to compete in the World Cup Final to be held in Las Vegas in April 2009, however the plan for Transatlantic is a European campaign in the first half of 2009, returning to Australia in time to contest the 2009 World Cup season from July.

Heath Ryan wins the CDI-W and the Pacific League Final

Nicola Turner, EFA National Office, Monday, 15 December 2008

Heath Ryan and Regardez Moi have earned themselves a place at the Dressage World Cup Final in Las Vegas.

In a weekend of duelling with Rachael Sanna and Jaybee Alabaster at the FEI World Cup Pacific League Final held at the Saddleworld Victorian Dressage Championships 11-14 December 2008  Heath and the 13-year-old Rubenstein stallion Regardez Moi won the Grand Prix Freestyle thus claiming the right to represent the Pacific League at the Final in Las Vegas in April 2009.

“The Final should be really fun,” says Heath about his American trip, “And a great way to get the horse on the world stage in the lead up to the World Equestrian Games in Kentucky in 2010.”

It was a close contest with Rachael Sanna and the rising star Jaybee Alabaster putting the pressure on Heath.  Rachael pipped Heath for the win in Grand Prix CDI-W on 65.875% to Heath's 65.542%  - but  Heath rose to the challenge to come up trumps in the Grand Prix Freestyle scoring 70.550% to Rachael’s 69.400%.  Mary Hanna on Tango V were in third place in both the Grand Prix and the Grand Prix Freestyle.

Although all plans are yet to be decided Heath is considering competing on the Florida circuit for a few weeks prior to the World Cup Final.  “It is always hard to be away from home for extended periods of time but I will be having a good look at the competitions in Florida to see if that could be an option.”

In other classes at the Saddleworld Victorian Dressage Championships .....

Rachael and Jaybee Alabaster won  the Grand Prix Special on a score of 66.480% against a smaller field.  Regardez Moi did not compete in the Special. Rachael and Alabaster started their competition on winning form on Thursday in the Intermediate 11 scoring 66.423%.  Heath and Regardez Moi were second on 66.016%.

Congratulations to Shannon McKimmie who won the Aachen Challenge and a trip to Aachen, Germany.

Results of the Young Horse Qualifiers were as follows...

The 4-year-old young horse class was won by Roger Fithardinge on Jive Time

The 5-year-old young horse class was won by Helen Macaskill on Neversfelde Rupert

The 6-year-old young horse class was won by Alycia Targa Neversfelde Weltsong

Boyd Exell wins again – this time in Geneva

Nicola Turner, EFA National Office, Monday, 15 December 2008

Australian Driving sensation Boyd Exell is on a winning streak. This past weekend he won the fifth leg of the FEI World Cup Driving in Geneva backing up from his victory in Budapest last weekend.

Exell is now ranked 2nd in the standings and is certain to get a start at the Final in Gothenburg on 21-22 February 2009 in which the top six drivers of the standings after Leipzig will qualify.

“I thought Jozsef Dobrovitz would be my biggest threat in Geneva, but he made a mistake. I am sure though that he won’t do that again in the Final! Geneva was my last competition before the Final. I competed in Stockholm, Budapest and Geneva week after week and this much travelling has a lot of impact on my horses. Although I won today, I felt my team went more flowing in Budapest last weekend. But the course in Geneva was also more technical, I like it better when the course is more flowing, especially in the obstacles,”said Exell in the FEI report.

Congratulations Boyd.

Jayden and Widelo at the 2008 National YR Championships
FEI YR World Cup Dressage Final

An update from Jayden Brown

Nicola Turner, EFA National Office, Monday, 15 December 2008

Jayden and his horse Widelo are competing in the FEI Young Rider World Cup Dressage Final in Frankfurt (GER)17-21 December. Jayden sent us an update of his trip.

Well things have been pretty hectic over here in Germany right from the day Widelo and I landed, so my apologies for not writing anything sooner!!  We had a very good flight over here from Sydney, with Manni (aka. Widelo) travelling really well.  He was the only horse on a flight full of Cargo but because he was handling the trip so well, we were able to leave the front dividers of the horse crate open so that he had a lot more head space.  The trip was about 40 hours from the stable in Sydney until our arrival at Gestut Muhlenort just outside Hannover.  This doesn’t include the day and a half of driving to get from home in Brisbane down to Sydney, so it really was a huge trip for Manni.

I have based myself and Manni at Leonie Bramall’s stable as I have worked for her a few times in the past and feel really confident in the routine and training here. The girls here had everything ready for Mani’s arrival so he was able to get settled straight into his stable and rest after the trip.

The following day I only hand walked Manni in the morning and afternoon so that he could start to adjust to the huge change.  Thankfully the temperature has stayed above 0 most of the time so we are both coping fairly well.  Daily life here at the stables is pretty busy with about 24 horses in training.  I usually ride about 5-7 horses including Manni, ranging from 3yo’s up to ‘S’ level advanced horses.

Since bringing Manni back up to full work after a week of very light exercise we have been quite busy with a competition in Elmshorn and also being apart of a training seminar with Jo Hinneman.  The competition had some good points and some weaknesses but the most important thing was to get him out so the Leonie could see how he reacts in a competition atmosphere and also what the judges would like to see improved. It was a little bit of a strange feeling warming up with Karin Rehbein and Holga finken, thankfully they were competing in a different class.  The canter work in our PSG test went really well and was rewarded with all 7’s and 8’s but there were a lot of small error’s in the trot and walk.  Leonie and I weren’t too bothered by the small mistakes as he only arrived in the country 9 days earlier so we expected that he would still be adjusting.  We ended up placing 5th in the PSG and 6th in the Kur with a rug, ribbon and plaque to bring home as a little souvenir.

After the competition we had another few easy days and then back up to full work.  Leonie was scheduled to be apart of a training seminar with her former trainer Jo Hinneman, so the horses from the barn here were going to be used as the example horses.  We took 5 horses all together, the two 3yo’s San Serano (San Remo) who was ridden by Leonie’s Bereiter; Furstin Bolera (Furst Heinrich/Bolero) ridden by me.  Two 5/6yo’s,  Athena Rubella (Abanos) again ridden by Leonie’s Bereiter,  Donna Antonia (Don Frederico) who was ridden by Leonie.  I also rode Manni in the medium/Advanced section.  Wolfhard Witte also bought 3 stallions from the State Stud in Celle, Furst Nymphenburg for the 4yo section,  Rascalino for the Medium section and Dancier  as the Advanced horse.

It was a fantastic evening with about 400 people attending and a great chance to get some more time in a competition arena full of people.  For Furstin, the 3yo mare it was her first time being ridden out of our stables.  She came to Leonie’s directly from her Breeder’s so it was a very big test for her.  Thankfully her dam line has some extremely good riding horses in it, so her temperament and rideablility made things a lot easier.  Manni also coped very well in the atmosphere and it was great to get two lesson’s from someone like Jo Hinneman!!

So now we are gearing up for the main event, the YR final in Frankfurt.  In about a week we will drive Manni down to Frankfurt to settle him in.  I am really looking forward to being at such a huge event, with the CDI-W and also the Nurnburg Burgpokal final which will no doubt have some amazing horses competing.

Thank you to every one who has helped in the organisation of this trip and also to every one wishing me luck

Cheers!!

Nominations For Appointment as EFA/FEI Stewards General closing soon.

Tracey Lesslie, EFA National Office, Thursday, 20 November 2008

Nominations for the appointment of EFA/FEI Stewards General close Friday 12 December at 5pm.

The EFA Stewarding accreditation program is an EFA Officiating responsibility that goes across all Disciplines and is facilitated by the EFA National Office.

The FEI has appointed Stewards General for each of its Disciplines (Sports) and expects its member National Federations (NFs) to adopt a similar system.  For NFs where the membership size and the number of participants in particular sports do not justify separate appointments, the FEI suggests that a number of sports are combined and become the responsibility of one Steward General.
We plan to appoint at least three Stewards General to cover all of our Sports in 2009. The National Office will carry out the overall coordination.
Should you wish to nominate for the position of EFA/FEI Stewards General please download the position description, nomination form and resume template here. If you have any further questions please contact Nathan Holman on 02 8762 7777.

Nominations should be submitted by 5pm 12 December 2008 to the EFA National Office P.O Box 673 Sydney Markets NSW 2129, fax 02 9763 2466 or email to tracey.lesslie@efanational.com.

Results from the Youth Development Jumping Squad selection series

Nicola Turner, EFA National Office, Wednesday, 10 December 2008

Results from the National selection series have been tabulated.

As part of the selection process for the National Youth Development Squad a two competition selection series was conducted in each State between 01 July and 20 December 2008.  The riders have been ranked according to their performance and the leading twelve riders are listed below.

In principle, the National Young Rider Jumping Squad will comprise up to 20 riders; however, this may vary from time to time. The squad will be selected based on general and competition criteria as below.

It is intended the selection of the Squad will comprise of:

The current Australian Young Rider Champion

Eligible Young Riders selected on the National Senior Squad

Up to 12 riders selected under the Competition Criteria

6 riders selected under the General Criteria (see below).

General Criteria

Given that at any stage of the competition criteria riders may for any reason not be able to participate, each State may nominate an additional rider for consideration by the National Jumping Selection Panel.

It is intended that the respective State Jumping Selection Panels will nominate an eligible rider it considers a worthy member of the Squad.

Members of this squad are, in principle, talented individuals who are identified as riders who produce consistent levels of performance and achievements in Jumping classes of 1.30m and better.  The development of these riders will ensure they are able to move to senior competition with a professional and guided background.

Boyd Excell wins World Cup Driving qualifier in Budapest

Nicola Turner, EFA National Office, Tuesday, 9 December 2008

Excell is now ranked 3rd after 4 of 7 events.

Report with asistance from the FEI.

Australia
’s Boyd Exell has won the fourth leg of the FEI World Cup™ Driving in Budapest after two magnificent rounds.

This was the first time an official FEI World Cup Driving competition was held in László Papp Sportarena in Budapest and it was very popular with the Hungarian spectators.

Dutchman Koos de Ronde was last to go in the final round but despite a very well driven course he finished one second slower than Exell’s fast time. Sweden’s Fredrik Persson was  also unable to equal the speed of his competitors and came third.

“The tactics of Koos de Ronde in the first round were very good, he forced Dobrovitz and myself to go fast. When I saw Dobrovitz’ performance was not so good, I knew I had to drive steady and not make any mistakes. In the winning round I had the chance to take a short cut. I knew it was very risky but I learned from Michael Freund that less meters is less time so I went for it. As in Stockholm my team felt better on the second day and I believe I have all the settings right at the moment.” said Exell.

According to Koos de Ronde (Ned), “It went super for me this evening and I drove two nice and clear rounds. Boyd drove a very fast winning round. I don’t know exactly where I lost that one second, but if you compete at this high level, this little difference makes the sport even more exciting.”

Congratulations Boyd.

Loan Horses required for the 2009 AYOF

Michelle Battams, Tuesday, 9 December 2008

With only four weeks until the 2009 Australian Youth Oluympic Festival, we are urging owners with an eligible horse to send in a loan horse agreement.

We urge owners who sent in an Expression of Interest Form to lend a horse to complete the Horse Owner Agreement below and send this in to us asap.  We need these forms to determine the number of horses we have and to make a final selection.

Horse Owners

We will need 20 Dressage horses that compete at Medium/Advanced level or higher with well established flying changes and two track work. Ponies considered as well as horses.

We will also need Jumping horses that are competent jumping 1.20m.

Owners who are prepared to lend their horses will be provided with:

  • Financial assistance of $500 per horse will be provided to owners who offer horses for the event. The horses are required from Monday, 12 to Sunday, 18 January 2009.
  • Admission to the event
  • A free pass to the Opening Ceremony
  • Meals and accommodation at SIEC
  • Basic feedstuffs, a stable and bedding for your horse
  • Recognition of your contribution in EFA publications
  • A memento of the event
Owners are expected to either groom for their horses themselves or provide a groom.  The athletes will assist in daily care of the horses including grooming, washing and stable cleaning wherever possible.  If you are interested in lending your horse but are not in a position to stay and groom for your horse we hope to have some experienced grooms who would be able to look after your horse.
As horse owners, you are going to be part of an international event, have fun with our visiting teams and will take home a memento and plenty of memories.

For the second time, Equestrian is represented in 2009 with the Disciplines of Dressage and Jumping. Up to six Teams will compete in the competition.

The festival is designed to provide an opportunity for junior/young athletes to compete in an atmosphere similar to an Olympic Games. It will provide athletes with the experience of living in an athlete’s village, participating in drug testing as well as competing against international athletes.

Each team will draw their horses; the Team Coach will then decide (after consultation with the owners and a short test ride) which horse suits each rider best.  There will be three days of training followed by three days of competition.

If you have any questions about what is involved please contact Toni Venhaus for information regarding Dressage horses:

FEI Dressage Task Force: Finalised Membership and Terms of Reference

Nicola Turner, EFA National Office, Tuesday, 9 December 2008

The finalised membership of the FEI Dressage Task Force is as follows:

Frank Kemperman (NED), chairman and representative of the event organisers;
Richard Davison (GBR), riders representative;
Robert Dover (USA), trainers representative;
Alain Francqueville (FRA), chef d’équipe
Katrina Wuest (GER),  judges representative;
Elizabeth Max-Theurer (AUT), owners representative

The aim of having this representation is to enable the key stakeholder groups to feed into the process and for task force representatives to communicate with stakeholders as appropriate during the year.

The FEI Dressage Task Force has been given the following brief by the Bureau:

1. Review the issues surrounding the very significant area of the training and development, assessment and selection of judges for major championships and Olympic Games; review as part of this development of randomised/ computerised judge selection process;

2. The fitness for purpose of the method of judging Dressage competitions needs thorough review – both in terms of the number of judges, their positioning and the judging process;

3. Following significant feedback from NFs, it is clear that the decision to move from four to three riders in a team is not universally accepted as the best for the sport and this therefore needs reviewing;

4. The system for qualification for Championships, and the receipt of Certificates of Capability for Championships, World Cups, and the Olympic Games;

5. Review the consultation process within Dressage and how it affects the structure of the committee going forward to ensure maximum involvement by the key stakeholders both internal to the sport and external within the greater sporting/ Olympic/ Paralympic environment.

The FEI Dressage Task Force will operate for one year and produce an interim report to the Bureau at its March/April meeting. It is foreseen that during the course of the next year, the process of seeking candidacies for the Dressage Standing Committee could take place as usual, with NFs submitting candidacies through the Nominations Committee, and that the members of the FEI Dressage Task Force will be able to seek to serve on the Standing Committee in the future.

During the course of the year the Dressage Director may refer ongoing Dressage matters to the FEI Dressage Task Force for feedback and advice.

Clarification of change in collective marks in New FEI tests

Nicola Turner, EFA National Office, Monday, 8 December 2008

From the FEI - Dressage Clarification - Change in Collective marks 2009

Following the release of the new Dressage tests on 14 November 2008, concerns were raised by some National Federations during the General Assembly wishing to keep the collecive marks at 2,2,2,2.

The Bureau/ Headquarters therefore referred the matter to the Dressage Task Force for a second opinion.

We can now inform you that the Dressage Task Force supports the change in Collectives to 1,1,2,2 the opinion of the majority of NFs as well as the opinion of the Working Group for Dressage Tests. Also many riders, trainers and judges felt that 17-25% of the total marks for the former collectives 2,2,2,2 was too high and there is now a better mathematical balance.

FEI Headquarters will monitor the effect of the change during 2009 as well as all new tests in use.

All Dressage 2009 tests can be downloaded for non commercial use from:

Sam Lyle wins Lakes and Craters CCI 3*

Nicola Turner, EFA National Office, Monday, 8 December 2008

NSW riders finish 1st,2nd and 3rd in Victoria.

Riding the 12-year-old Thoroughbred gelding Classic Mischief, who also placed 2nd in the CIC 2* at Adelaide last month, Sam was placed 4th after Dressage and climbed up to 1st place after being the only rider to finish inside the time on the cross-country.

"He has always been very talented, this time he was good in all three phases, especially the cross-country," said Sam.

"He has taken some time to be consistent. He is naturally very careful so I have had to work on his confidence on the cross-country."

Time played an influential role in the final placings.  Stuart Tinney was 3rd after dressage aboard Tim Game’s Staccato mare Panamera and moved to 2nd with a clear cross-country round and 6.8 time faults.  In third place after the cross-country was Christopher Burton on Holstein Park Leilani whose position improved from 5th place after the Dressage with 5.2 time faults.  Georgia Clifford slipped from 2nd place after Dressage slip when she incurred 15.5 time on the cross-country.

"Time was hard to get, Classic Mischef is a very fast horse which in the end made all the difference," said Sam.
The second fastest round of the class was Kevin McNab riding Major James who added just 4 cross-country time faults to his score.  This improved Kevin’s position from 6th after Dressage to 4th after cross-country.  Kevin held onto 4th place on Sunday with one rail.

The top 3 places did not change on Sunday with each combination jumping clear rounds.

Of the 6 starters in the CCI 3* class Dressage leaders Olivia Bunn and GV Bullwinkle were the only combination incur jumping faults in the cross-country.  Olivia had one unfortunate stop at a fence on a mound before the water jump.  Olivia jumped clear on Sunday.

Sam plans to do Adelaide CCI 4* with Classic Mischief  in 2009.

The CIC 3* had just 3 horses in the class.  Kevin McNab won on Kelecyn Stiff Drinks, 2nd and 3rd went to Sam Lyle aboard  Scribbly Park Sourcerer and Star Vision.

George Sheridan who is based with Chris Burton in Wilberforce, NSW rode Woznme to win the CCI 2*.  George won the Dressage and did not add a single penalty to his score over the weekend. 2nd place went to Natalie Blundell and Algebra.

Amanda Howell did the Victorians proud by winning the CCI 1* on Acacia Ridge Riley leading from start to finish. 2nd to Luke Jones riding Charlatan.

Edwina wins CSI 5* in Brussels

Nicola Turner, EFA National Office, Tuesday, 2 December 2008

Edwina Alexander has a great weekend in Brussels and drives off in a new Audi A6. Video links attached.

Australian Jumping sensation Edwina Alexander has won her first CSI 5* on Itot du Chateau in Brussels (BEL) on 30 November.  Edwina won the Audi Grand Prix and scored herself an Audi A6 in the process.  Edwina beat an impressive line up on the world's best Jumping combinations including 2nd placed Marco Kutscher (Cash) and 3rd placed Marcus Ehning (Sandro Boy).

Prior to the BIG win Edwina placed 2nd to Frenchman Michel Robert in the Rolex IJRC Top Ten on Itot du Chateau.  Edwina had just one time fault in the first round but was faultess in the second round.  60 year old master Robert was the only rider to have two faultless rounds.  Edwina was determined not to make the same mistake in the Grand Prix.

Edwina was also thrilled with her new mare Late Night who finished 2nd in the Prix Optima 1.55m.

Edwina tells us about the weekend....

"Basically it all started on Friday night with the Rolex final of the top 10. I was 5th to go and no clears yet. Itot jumped a super round clear but Unfortunately I had 1 time fault. I was very upset with myself because it cost me a lot. After that there was 3 clear rounds. Micheal Robert, Marcus Earning and of course Meridith with Shutterfly. Then I had no choice that to try and go clear in the jump off. It was also a risk because if I had 1 down then I would also have been slow and maybe 5th place. So I managed to jump clear putting some pressure on the other riders. Micheal was after me and he was clear but not fast but anyway ahead of me. Then Marcus had 1 down and Meridith had 2 down. So I was still very happy to finish up 2nd for my first time in the Rolex top 10. There were many people watching and it was world wide live on TV. We had also to answer some questions to the crowd and TV.

Then on Saturday night I was riding my new 8 yrs mare Late Night. This mare has really surprised me and is turning out to be fantastic. She has won many speed classes at 1.40m level but not jumped any big classes. Over the last few shows I have done with her she is improving all the time. The class was a 1.55m jump off and a very short time. This time I wasn't going to have time faults!! She jumped a fabulous clear and in time. There were 10 clear and I decided to try a bit in the jump off. She jumped fantastic with a clear good enough for second!! I was so happy because in a short time she has come a long way and I'm sure next year she will be able to jump some good grand prix.

Then Sunday came and I was determined to do better than 2nd. Itot jumped a good 1st round and was full of energy. The class was big but more on the technical side. When I went in there was already 8 clear.

So the jump off came and already they were fast. I saw Marcus Earning and for the 1st time in my life I believed I could be faster than him!! And I was half a second faster. I was so happy and it was a super feeling. There was many spectators and a lot of press and Itot was proud of himself. I won an Audi A6 worth almost 60000 euro.

This is the first Grand Prix I win with Isovlas Itot du Chateau. I have been close many times but I just didn't win so this is great. He is a  fantastic horse that can go very fast in the jump off. I can make his  canter easily longer and shorter, he can turn short and he's fast.

So I had a wonderful show and hopefully I will climb again up the ladder of the ranking list!!"

Congratulations Edwina!

US Cowboy rides across AUS for charity

Nicola Turner, EFA National Office, Monday, 1 December 2008

Find out about this remarkable journey and how you can donate for a good cause.

For the benefit of children's charities, Ezra Cooley, a 29 year old cowboy from Chico, California, began Ezra’s Expedition April 5th 2006. He set out to ride his horses around the world to help raise money for children’s charities. Ezra alone with no support team following him on the road, has managed to ride and survive over 120 degree temperatures in the deserts of the Great Basin, to below freezing temperatures in Oklahoma’s biggest ice storm in history.  He rode through the streets of Manhattan and down Wall Street on the back of his trusted horse, Big Red. During his journey across the United States, he’s raised over 10,000.00 for the National Children’s Cancer Society and Children’s Miracle Network, and plans to head to Australia on November 10th to ride for Heart Kids Organization.

Oliver Townend wins Express Eventing

Nicola Turner, Monday, 1 December 2008

Clayton Fredericks finishes 4th.

England's Oliver Townend riding Flint Curtis has won the inaugural Express Eventing International Cup at Cardiff’s Millenium Stadium and pocketed the $100,000 first prize.

Lucy Wiegersma and Shaabrak, were 2nd and won £50,000. In fact the Brits took 1st 2nd and 3rd place in a tough competition in which only 6 of the 19 starters completed the event.  Over half the field was eliminated on the show jumping or cross-country phases.

William Fox-Pitt and Ballincoola finished third a couple of seconds behind Lucy and pocketed £20,000.  Australia’s Clayton Fredericks and Ben Along Time finished 4th.

Oliver and Flint Curtis did a great dressage to music test to go into the jumping phase well placed. Flint was in a class of his own, flying round foot perfect to be the fastest time of the day by 40 seconds.

Considered to be the equivalent to cricket's Twenty20, the invitation-only competition offered total prize money of 250,000 pounds. It compressed the traditional outdoor three-day event into a five-hour indoor spectacle in a bid to boost the sport's popularity, and attracted close to 14,000 people.

The idea is to enable spectators to stay seated out of the weather and view the entire event in a condensed space and time-frame.

It was a day of ups and downs.  Bettina Hoy (GER) riding her seasoned champion Ringwood Cockatoo was leading after the Freestyle Dressage and as the jumping was run in reverse order of the Dressage results, was  last to jump.  Perhaps put off by the tragic loss of Mary King’s Call Again Cavalier who fell on the cross-country, Bettina retired on course.

Although there has not been an official statement yet it is believed that Call Again Cavalier broke his femur at an apex and was put down.  The beautiful 16-year-old gelding by Cavalier Royale was in the bronze-medal winning British team at the Olympics earlier this year.

New Zealand's Mark Todd, whose mount Gandalf put a hole in a cross-country fence that could not be rebuilt said the "big, testing" course was too difficult for most of the horses on their first outing at such an event.

He agreed that the competition was more suited to experienced horses but said "everyone's really positive about the whole concept".

Organisers and stadium staff had about 12 hours to transform the arena after the Wales-Australia rugby test. Organisers intend to continue with their plans to develop the competition into a worldwide series.

Laurie shines again at Sale

Monday, 1 December 2008

Lisa Mawson reports from Sale World Cup Qualifier.

Laurie Lever and Ashleigh Drossel Dan made it two from two when they took out the GBG Construction World Cup Qualifier at Sale on Sunday, November 30.

Conditions were far from perfect on Saturday when almost 50mm of rain fell at the grounds, but careful planning by the organisers and some much needed sunshine ensured the footings were superb for the feature event of  “The Elms” Spring Jumping Classic.

Lever jumped the only double clear and fast round to take the win ahead of Chris Burton aboard Copabella Visage on four penalties, and local rider Gavin Chester on Warlord II, eight penalties.

“We were very doubtful the event was going to run because of the weather,” Lever said after his win.

“But the committee worked hard and it was in the lap of the Gods which saved the arena today. They made it as good as it could possibly be.

“It was a credit to the course designer, Leeson Sirett, that so many horses came close to clear rounds. Leeson did everything in his power to put the jumps in the best possible position in these trying conditions.”

International judge and event organiser Anne Garner said the courses were big and inviting.

“They encouraged the horses to really extend themselves. I had Laurie as a favourite to win back to back, which he did in great form,” she said.

Fourteen riders started in the 675m first round which consisted of 12 obstacles and 15 jumping efforts. The first was a 1.4 x 1.8m triple bar then on to a 1.5m vertical.

Course designer Leeson Sirett said the course was big, and would only get bigger.

“Conditions have been greatly affected by the wet weather,” he said.

“The most marked difference is the overall shape of the plan, but the course is big, and gets big quickly.”

This proved to be true with fence three a 1.48 x 1.5m oxer, fence four a 1.49x 1.90m triple bar and then the first of the combinations, two 1.48m verticals set at 7.9m apart.

Fence six was a 1.5 x 1.5m oxer and seven was the 1.5m brick wall. Few combinations had problems at the wall.

Fence eight, was the house sponsored by GBG Constructions, with the 1.50m vertical riding well.

The final fences on course included a 1.50 x 1.50m oxer at nine, a curved line to a 1.55m vertical at 10 and then a 1.50 x 1.57 x .75m rising oxer at 11.

The last line of fences was the treble combination at 12 with a 1.43 x 1.50 x 1.50 oxer on to a 1.49m vertical and finally a 1.1.45 x 1.45 x 1.80m oxer. The shortened distance between the first and second part of the treble didn’t cause many concerns to riders.

Leeson Sirett predicted two clear rounds, stating if he got four he would be “very happy”.

Leeson wasn’t far wrong, with Laurie Lever, Chris Burton and Clem Smith the only clear rounds in the first. Gavin Chester, Amy Graham and Julia Hargreaves all finished on four penalties while Tim Amitrano, Billy Raymount, Adam Mellers and Wendy Schaefer were on eight.

These 10 riders took to the second round, a shortened course including four jumps from round one and three new fences, a 1.54 x 1.80m oxer at 13, the brick wall in reverse at 14, and a 1.62m vertical at 15.

Laurie Lever posted the fastest second round in a time of 51.83 seconds, cementing his win.

Second placegetter, Chris Burton and Copabella Visage completed round two in 54.27s and four penalties while third placegetter Gavin Chester and Warlord II, carrying four penalties from round one, had a further four penalties at fence 15 with a time of 54.95s.

This was Chester and Warlord II’s first outing this season since returning from America in August.

“I am pretty pleased with is performance, although he got a bit strong in the first round,” Chester said.

“I had originally planned to compete him all three days, but this was reduced to two because it was so wet. The course rode really well and the ground held up quite well.”

Fourth place went to Julia Hargreaves and Copabella Haymen, carrying four penalties from round one, a further four at 12a to finish in 55.08s.

Queenslander Billy Raymont and Stardom had a rail at fence 13 to finish on 12 penalties and a time of 53.83s.

Adam Mellers and Animate had a total of 12 penalties, four from the first round to finish sixth. Mellers was third in the World Cup standings, while leader Amy Graham aboard Transatlantic, posted four penalties in her first round, and had rails at fence 1 and 12c to finish on 12 penalties, to finish seventh.

Attention will now turn to Sydney for the final qualifier in the 2008-09 season of the Australian League on December 14.
