Working Group for domestic Jumping formed

The National Jumping Committee (NJC) together with Equestrian Australia (EA) High Performance have established a working group with a mandate to strengthen the  Australian Jumping scene to make it easier for riders transitioning from  domestic to international competition.

The domestic jumping scene is critical for Australia’s long term success in the sport and EA and the NJC recognise the need to provide direction and leadership to maintain Australia’s presence on the international jumping stage.

The working group has been formed under the leadership of former EA board member Nick Crowe and brings together Chair of National Jumping Selectors, Graeme Watts, National Jumping Committee Chair, Gavin Chester and a previous Australian Equestrian Team member, Allison Rowland, who will act as a rider’s representative.

A key initiative of the working group is a State of Origin Team’s Competition which will work to addresses the shortage of team competition available to domestic Jumping riders.

The ‘State of Origin’ series will see rounds hosted in Qld, NSW, Vic, & SA in conjunction with World Cup events.  These events will be run at 2 Star level (1.40-1.45) under Nations Cup rules.  Riders will be eligible to compete for the state in which they were first a member of EA.  (Full rules will be released shortly).

The group has identified the need to support specialty jumping events in a bid to raise their profile, attract more sponsorship and ultimately lift the standard of jumping events in the country.

A further focus area for the group is on the development of course designers and attracting more local officials to gain international level accreditation. In addition to offering more challenging courses, the fences which riders are jumping need to be more technical and there needs to be a focus on meeting optimum time. The Course Designer course with Werner Deeg clinic in April provides an opportunity to address these areas.

The working group is also considering the training needs of domestic squad combinations and is currently looking at scenarios for funding in this area. The group will work collaboratively with state jumping committees to find ways to best assist and support Australian based riders.
