Looking back at WEG and forward to 'Creating our Future'

IMPULSION

EA Newsletter November 2010

Welcome

Well what a few months it has been for Equestrian Sport in Australia. I have highlighted below the three main programs / initiatives that have been implemented / commenced during this time:

World Equestrian Games

Although a report on WEG will appear elsewhere in this newsletter. I want to congratulate all those involved in the WEG Campaign where the Australian Team did us proud recording the best-ever overall performance in the disciplines of Dressage & Jumping, led by Brett Parbery with our highest ever dressage score and placing, with a 76.350% and ninth place. The Jumpers achieved their target by placing 7th in the team event and qualifying for the World Equestrian Games. Our Vaulters, Endurance riders and Reiners also performed well against the best in the world. Congratulations to Sharon Jarvis for winning two individual bronze medals in the Para-Equestrian competition. One of the main highlights of the event was Boyd Exell’s performance winning our first ever WEG Gold Medal for Australia in the Driving event. Boyd has been a stand-out performer in Driving events around the world this year, he is a true champion and it was a well deserved victory. The Eventing Team had a disappointing event, however, Stuart Tinney showed again that he is a consistent performer and World Class by finishing in 8th Place.
I would also like to acknowledge a couple of groups who were the unsung heroes of the campaign and who don’t always get the recognition they deserve. Namely, the Grooms and Owners, without whom a campaign would not be possible
I personally would like to thank all team members and management for making me feel very welcome within the team environment. I look forward to assisting where possible in the London Campaign bring on “Operation Grenache Mean Time”
Below is a summary of the Australian WEG performances. Please see the Australian Equestrian Team website for all the WEG reports (check in archive news) , photo galleries, Hamish and Dave's videos and blogs, press releases and audio interviews, the full list of medallists, the Team Medal Tally and results of every Australian competitor

Congratulations to Heath Ryan and Regardez Moi  - 2010 Australian Grand Prix Dressage Champions.  Congratulations to winners and placegetters at all levels and to the fabulous orgainsing committee for a successful and professional event 28-31 October at Sydney International Equestrian Centre.
Congratulations also to Megan and her Don Ramiro mare, Donnabella, on gaining the highest overall percentage in the Individual Freestyle across the 2010 CDIY events in AUS. The FEI have confirmed that Megan and Donnabella are the combination that will represent AUS in the CDIY Final in Frankfurt, Germany, in December.

Equestrian Strategic priorities 2011 – 2016 “Creating our future”
As mentioned in previous newsletters since  mid 2010 we have been working very closely with our members the Equestrian State bodies and key stakeholders including each Equestrian discipline through the National Committees and the Australia Sports Commission to finalise the strategic priorities for  the organisation from 2011 – 2016. I am pleased to inform you that these strategic priorities were launched at the recent Equestrian Australia AGM and are outlined below:

1.     Create a national, contemporary approach to membership which is attractive to clubs, spectators, supporters, fans and other equestrian groups
2.     Develop a fully integrated National High Performance Pathway from talent identification through to elite competitor
3.     Introduce Equestrian as a curriculum option to all Australian schools
4.     Package and promote Equestrian Australia’s offering to raise awareness of the sport amongst corporates, primary industry and the general public
5.     Stream live feeds of equestrian sporting events and results
6.     Propose hybrid versions of the sport to grow the spectator and participant base
7.     Develop a nationally synchronised multi-sport annual calendar of events which features an iconic event

The above strategic priorities will become be the focus for our organisation in the next five years and will determine the success of the organisation in “creating our future”. I am looking forward to working with all Equestrian sport stakeholders in Australia to achieve the above priorities

EADRA
As mentioned in previous newsletters Equestrian Australia has been working hard with other Equine Industry representatives to determine the best possible levy structure if there is an outbreak of an equine disease in the future.

The preferred levy option has now been determined by industry. The principle on which the levy has been developed is to ensure that the levy collection was equitable across the horse-owning community.

Two levy options have been identified as the most practical methods of repaying any future
debt. The following motion was passed by the Horse Levy Working Group and subsequently the Equestrian Australia board:
“That the Horse Industry uses manufactured feed and anthelmintics (worm
treatments) as approved levy mechanisms for recovering the industry’s share of an
Emergency Animal Disease Response”.

Should you have any questions in relation to the levy mechanism please feel free to contact Tracey Lesslie begin_of_the_skype_highlighting     end_of_the_skype_highlighting at Equestrian Australia.

Before I close, though, I would like to thank our funding agencies, sponsors and supporters at the National level for their continued assistance.

Until next time,

Grant

Supporters and Sponsors

The Australian Sports Commission is our Principal Sponsor and we hope that High Performance funding and other grants will continue beyond the next funding cycle.

Many thanks also to the Australian Olympic Committee, who apart from organising the Australian Delegation to go to the Games is also involved in securing more funding to guarantee Australia's medal success at future Games.

We are also looking forward to a continued good working relationship with the Australian Paralympic Committee in the management of the Para-Equestrian High Performance Program

We hope our partnerships with our commercial sponsors can be strengthened further in the next Olympiad. We are pleased that Kentucky Equine Research and Ridley have renewed their partnership deal with EA.
We thank our partners...
