 NCAS Coaching UpdateA reminder to EA NCAS Coaches that renewal time is only a few months away.
To renew registration as an EA/NCAS coach, the coach must:
§ be a current member of their State EA Branch
§ hold a current first aid certificate (including CPR)
§ have signed the EA Coaches Code of Ethics
§ have satisfied the EA/NCAS and ASC updating requirements (see below)
§ have current Coach Insurance or purchase EA Coach Insurance
§ pay the EA Coach Registration fee
Coaches must attend a Compulsory Updating Clinic every two (2) years to maintain their accreditation.
As a minimum the Compulsory Updating Course must cover the following topics:
§ Review insurance coverage
§ Review risk management procedures
§ Any new developments or Policy & Procedures
§ Any developments to the NCAS program/ASC
§ Any new legislation that may be relevant (such as WWC Check)
§ Any general interest or other professional development presentations may be included.
Coaches are also required to progressively fulfil approved updating requirements to keep their coaching knowledge and skills up to date and record this in the “EA NCAS Updating Summary” included in the Annual Registration Pack. This is to ensure that EA Coaches keep up to date with equestrian and general coaching best practice.
Please check your records now to see if you need to attend a clinic, renew your membership, first aid or private insurance....don't leave it until 30th September!!!!
Job Opportunity - RDA Singapore
Riding for the Disabled Association (RDA) Singapore is looking for a Riding Instructor to provide progressive, therapuetic riding lessons to disabled adults and children, to assist with horse training, to develope a Para Equestrian Squad and to support its team of volunteer instructors.
This is a special position, which requires someone with good interpersonal skills, a strong team player and able to work independently along with the ability to work well under pressure and multi-task.
Minimum qualification is the BHS AI or equivanlent. Training in Hippotherapy would be an advantage.

 First Aid and Duty of DisclosureIt is a requirement of Coach Accreditation to have first aid.
The Standard of Care a coach owes their clients means that the ability to act in the case of an emergency is required. Although for some, the ability to render first aid may be compromised - through injury, disablement, pregnancy etc. It is recommended that coaches whose ability to give first aid may be limited abide by the concept of "Duty of Disclosure".
That means when new clients come on board Coaches should make them aware that they have physical limitations or impairment and remind all clients at the beginning of each lesson.
 The International Society for Equitation Science Conference - Sydney 12-14th JulyThis will be the 5th conference with previous venues including Melbourne, Milan, Michigan and Dublin.
Registration is now open for this opportunity to hear the latest equestrian research findings as well as identifying possible future projects.
Early bird registration discounts close on 20th May.
The theme of this years conference is Ethical Equitation - a sustainable approach.
The Conference will cover a variety of topics with a focus on the theme of ethical equitation and the development of a sustainable approach to horse training and the use of horses for leisure, at work and in competition.
This conference will be a great opportunity for scientists and horse riders, trainers and coaches to meet and share their knowledge and experience. As well as research reports there will be a practical workshop on day 2 to include presentations by well-respected horsemen and women with international success in their field of equestrian performance.
Participants may be able to claim professional development or continuing education credits for attending the conference.

 New dressage Tests Our new tests are based on the 2007 USEF Dressage Tests and have been adapted for use in Australia.
The Equestrian Australia Dressage Tests for Preliminary through to Advanced levels and Explanatory Notes are now available.
They have been a long time coming but at last they are here.
These tests are quite interesting and challenging and follow the principles of the Training Scale at each level.
They introduce new movements such as leg yielding at Novice, renvers at Elementary and half turn on the haunches at Elementary & Medium.
The new tests will become effective from 1 July 2009 and will remain in place until December 2013.
As a continuing service to EA Members and affiliated clubs these tests can be downloaded from the Dressage page of the Equestrian Australia website.
Hard copies of these tests are available upon request at a minimal charge to cover printing and postage.

"We believe that the 2007 USEF dressage tests are the best versions ever released, and we hope the new partnership with Australian competitions utilizing these tests will benefit all Australian dressage riders and the sport."
FREESTYLE TESTS There is no change to the compulsory movements contained in the current 2008 Freestyle tests. Riders can now include the new movements e.g. leg yielding (Novice), renvers (Elementary), half turn on the haunches (Elementary and Medium). The table at 6.7 in the rule book will be updated to include these movements as permissible with the release of the next rule book amendments (1/1/10).
 EA Jumping Rule ChangesNew EA Jumping Rules are due to be released in June/July.
A summary of procedings of the National Jumping Committee are posted on the Jumping web page so riders and officials can keep up to date with changes and developments in their discipline. To see these summaries click here.
At the last meeting in February 2009, the committee agreed, after much discussion, that the wording for Article 256.2.1 will state "Competitors must wear hunting or hacking jacket, white or light beige breeches or jodhpurs (unless stated otherwise in the show schedule), black or brown top boots, a dress shirt and tie or a dress shirt with a ratcatcher collar.
Also the wording for Article 256.1.2 will state "When inspecting the course, and competing, dress must be neat and tidy."
The above rule will be effective when the updated rules are published. The below rule is an old one now but good to remind everyone!
Three Refusals Rule
All Committee Members were in favour of adopting the rule whereby 325mpm and 3 refusals will apply to all classes 1.15m and below. This rule is to be included in the EFA Jumping rules and become effective as of the 1st July 2008
 FEI Jumping Rule ChangesThe FEI Rules for Jumping Events 23rd edition, effective 1st January 2009 can be viewed on the following website http://www.fei.org/Disciplines/Jumping/Pages/Rules.aspx
All changes are highlighted in red bold print and deleted text is indicated by a strikethrough. We recommend that all jumping officials take the time to familiarize themselves with the changes.
 Correction to EA and FEI Eventing RulesThe recent ethos Magazine had an error Page 27 under "New Eventing Rules".
All Competitors, Organising Committees, Jump Judges and TD's should note:
At ALL LEVELS (both FEI and National) fall of rider at an obstacle on Cross Country results in ELIMINATION.
FEI RULE 532.1.1 Scoring - Breaking Frangible pin - results in 25 penalty points rather than elimination as of 15 April 2009.
 CE/SSTA Update WorkshopsThe CE/SSTA Update Workshops are coming up fast - in fact WA and SA are taking place as I type!!
Registration forms have been sent to all CE and SSTA's - if you missed out please contact EA National Office.
The CE / SSTA update courses will be run on the following dates and at the venues outlined:
Attendance at a CE/SSTA update clinic is compulsory every 2 years to remain accredited.
New Resources Release
The following resources will be introduced at the CE/SSTA Workshop:
§ Policy & Proedure Manual for Candidates, Coaches and Coach Educators/SSTA's
§ New final assessment tasks for Level 1 General, Dressage and Showhorse
§ New media CDs containing the new EA logos and style guide
§ New Level 1 Coaching Activity Slip/Assessment Workbooks
All coaches will receive the same information at the completion of the CE/SSTA Update courses.
The new Final Assessment Guide for Candidates, Coordinators and Assessors will be released soon after along with a set of written papers for the final assessment.
These will be distributed to State NCAS Coordinators for future use.
Changes to Dressage Judge Upgrade Requirements
In an effort to improve the NOAS accreditation scheme for the judges who are planning to upgrade the ADJC & ADC in conjunction with the National Education Manager have approved the following in relation to NOAS Judges Pre Requisites for Upgrading:
§ Mentoring is no longer an assessed prerequisite for upgrading. It will be removed from the Work books for future candidates
§ Some additional shadow judging is required to replace this – see table below:
However, mentoring is considered by the ADJC to be one of the best ways to educate and improve the knowledge and skills of those judges who wish to upgrade and also those judges who wish to maintain and refresh their knowledge and skills. Nothing beats the one to one interaction and also small group interaction.
Several models have been developed to provide mentoring opportunities for all judges. The ADJC would encourage all Dressage Committees to think creatively as to how to provide mentoring opportunities for their judges and also their upgrading candidates.
Personal contact by current mentors / Judge Educators to upgrading candidates or any judge to arrange a mentoring session at a competition or other suitable occasion.
Qld/NSW have assigned a schedule of mentors to events of a significant level e.g. two day championships which run a very broad program. This schedule is made public through website and newsletter and those who wish to be mentored can choose the mentor, time and level they wish to participate in.
Victoria/Qld have developed Judges group trips to the CDI Sydney and National Championships. Mentoring session are part of the program for these judges. It’s a great opportunity to get to know your fellow judges as well.
When a Judge candidate registers for upgrading or commencing the workbook a mentor, in the candidates region, is assigned to assist and communicate with this person ‘Introduction to Dressage Judging’ workshops, where candidates / upgrading and potential candidates are stepped through the workbooks in a practical situation by a Mentor / Judge Educator
NOAS 27 (Note – changes to the table are highlighted in red)
Judges who are already undertaking their pre requisites in 2009 have a couple of options open to them:
§ If they have already completed all their mentoring and have their shadow judging to complete then they should keep going as per the current rule for shadow judging
§ If they have started their mentoring but not yet completed the current requirement they can continue as per the current rule re mentoring and shadow judging. Alternatively they can discard the mentoring they have done and just do the required shadow judging as per the table above.
§ If they haven’t started any of their pre requisites in relation to Mentoring or shadow judging they must complete their shadow judging as per the above table.
As you can see the supervising shadow judging judge for Novice and Elementary can be a D level judge. However, it is up to the SDA to appoint suitable D level judges to undertake this important role. In future mentoring/assessing training will be provided to D level judges.
All of the above will be updated in the rule book when we do our next updates – e.g. 1/1/10.
Hopefully as a result of the above we will see more judges, upgrading, entering the system and remaining.
 Jumping and Eventing Officials Accreditation Jumping and Eventing Officials have now joined the ranks of Dressage and Show Horse judges to become registered in the National Officials Accreditation Scheme administered by the Australia Sports Commission.
Over 550 letters were sent to Jumping and Eventing Officials in early May, in order to reaccredit and clarify details.
Returns are coming in thick and fast!!
Please be aware that EA National is trying to verify details provided by State Office and Discipline Committees against the National Database and the FEI records.
There are some discrepancies between these records so we are asking the State Discipline Committees and the FEI to verify accreditation levels for quite a number of people.
This could take a while so if you have not received your accreditation card please be patient!!
