Kermond Wins Senior Jumping Title in a Thriller

Jamie Kermond and Caracass
Senior Australian Show Jumping Champions for 2013

The Australian Show Jumping Championships for 2013 concluded in dramatic fashion late Sunday with the crowning of New South Wales rider Jamie Kermond as this year's senior Australian Show Jumping Champion.

The battle for the title was forced to a two way jump off against the clock after the Grand Prix concluded and Kermond and his mount Caracas and Queensland rider Clem Smith and Guru were on eight penalties a piece.

When Smith came out first and had a rail down the title was Kermond’s for the taking and he rode his mount to victory by a delivering clear and seemingly effortless round.

Leading into Sunday's final Kermond's elite squad mount Colthaga was considered one of the favourites for the title but the mare had a refusal in the first round and did not come out to contest the second.

Course designer Frederic Cottier, who is also the course designer for next year's World Equestrian Games, produced a tough track that produced just one other clear round which came from South Australian Tim Clarke and Caltango.

Reigning senior champions Tom McDermott and Romantic Dream could not replicate their performance from last year but the day wasn’t all a disappointment for McDermott after he narrowly defeated Kiwi rider Bridget Hansen to defend his title in the Young Rider class.

When McDermott won the Young Rider title he was on track to replicate his performance from 2012 where he won both the senior and young rider titles, but Romantic Dream incurred 16 jumping penalties in the first round putting the title out of reach for the 20 year old.

In the junior division it was the Tripp sisters of New South Wales who took top honours with 15 year old Jessica taking the crown ahead of older sister Samantha who was runner-up.

Australia's Young Riders Secure Clean Sweep for Australia

Australia's young rider team has followed the lead of their senior compatriots and defeated New Zealand in their opening round of the Young Rider Oceania Championships.

Run in conjunction with the young rider team’s event at Saturday’s Australian Show Jumping Championships, the Oceania Championships displayed the best up and coming talent from both sides of the Tasman.

The Australian team of Nicole Bruggermann, Kelly Slater, Sarah Beale and Tom McDermott finished the two round event with a total of 12 penalties on the scorecard, 20 penalties fewer than New Zealand who ended on a score of 32, of which 24 came in the opening round.

South Australian combination Nicole Bruggermann and Marine who were first to go for the home team, were crucial to its success delivering two clear rounds for Australia.

Tom McDermott and CP Rolex had eight jumping penalties in the first round but went clear in the second.

Chef d’Equipe Jess Barton was pleased with her team’s performance and happy that her first outing as Chef d’Equipe for Australia ended in a win.

“I’m absolutely wrapped with how each team member rode, they were all very professional in their approach and handled the pressure well.

“I was confident that Nicole had the experience to come out and set a strong pace and it was a huge boost to the team to have her go clear in the second round,” she said.

The Australian Show Jumping Championships concludes Sunday with the crowing of the individual junior, young rider and senior individual champion. Results from all classes are available at http://www.asjc.equestrian.org.au

Australia wins Oceania Jumping Championships opener

Australia has won the opening round of the 2013 Oceania Jumping Championships.

What was to be a two round event ended prematurely after the New Zealand team elected not to come out and contest the second round.

New Zealand Chef d’Equipe John Cottle said he was disappointed that his team had to bow out early after two horses pulled up sore.

“It’s unfair to contest the second round, I’m not trying to be a defeatist but we’re thinking of the horses. I’m a big believer of team competitions but we have to think of the horses.

“It’s very disappointing for the team but we’ve been around horses long enough to know that sometimes these things happen,” he said.

New Zealand were first to go and their stake on the title started strongly after opening combination Ross Smith and Quite Cassini posted a clear round but their good run was short lived after a double refusal to Lisa Coupe and Bates Amaretto saw them eliminated and Luke Dee and Ombudsman picked up 17 penalties.

Australia’s opening rider Tom McDermott and his mount Romantic Dream put Australia in a strong position with a very fast and clear opening round. McDermott said he was pleased to be given the opportunity to represent his country.

“There’s always extra pressure when you’re representing your country but you just try and come out and do your best and hopefully you go well.

“I feel really privileged to be doing what I’m doing. It’s great to be on the Australian team,” he said.

Sharon Slater and Ulixes were the only other combination to produce a clear round in the Oceania team’s event.

“I feel very privileged to be part of the team with the boys in it, they’ve done a great job. I was a little bit worried about my horse yesterday when it had four down. I’m pleased that he redeemed himself today,” she said.

Today’s Oceania Championships was held in conjunction with the Australian Show Jumping Championships senior team’s event where Queensland was the best placed state followed by Victoria and South Australia.

Earlier in the day the New South Wales team won the Junior team’s championship followed by Victoria, Queensland and South Australia.

Australia's senior jumping team wins toss - elects to jump second

Australia's senior jumping team consisting of Jamie Kermond, Tom McDermott, Sharon Slater and Shane Davidson has elected to go second in tomorrow's opening round of the 2013 Oceania Championships after Chef d-Equipe Vicki Roycroft won the coin toss against New Zealand late this afternoon.

The Aussies will be aiming to take command of the two round series which is being held in conjunction with this year’s Australian Show Jumping Championships (which started today at the Werribee Park Equestrian Centre) and the Royal Melbourne Show.

Earlier today Jamie Kermond and his team horse Colthaga gave the Australians a confidence boost when they took victory with a clear round in the opening day class of the senior championships.

The combination were first to go and Kermond was pleased to post a strong start with his Australian team horse.

“Colthaga came out early and she jumped fantastic. (My second horse) Valhalla was very good too but was unlucky to have a rail down.

“It’s great to be here riding in the championships but it’s still early days and I’m looking forward to tomorrow,” he said.

Australia’s young rider team will also be feeling positive after team members Tom McDermott and Nicole Bruggermann finished the opening day class of the young rider Championships in first and second respectively.

As well as representing Australia in the senior and young rider team’s event, McDermott has the added task of defending the Australian senior and young rider titles. He’ll line up in the young rider team’s event on Saturday and will stake his claim on the two individual titles on Sunday.

The Australian and New Zealand teams will attend a welcome ceremony later this evening where the Australian senior and young rider teams will be presented with their team shirts and saddlecloths.

Australia names Jumping teams for Oceania Championships

Jumping prodigy Tom McDermott is set to strike twice at the Oceania Championships* (formerly known as the Trans-Tasman) happening at this weekend's Australian Show Jumping Championships with the 20 year old today named a member of Australia's senior and young rider teams ensuring an impressive Australian line-up for the battle between New Zealand.

McDermott will be flanked by in form riders Jamie Kermond and Sharon Slater as well as Shane Davidson who has previously represented Australia as an individual at the World Young Horse Championships but never in a team’s event.

Davidson says he’s excited for the chance to represent his country.

“I’m very honoured to have this opportunity. It’s been a goal of mine for a long time to make an Australian team and I’m very excited to have this opportunity.

“I’m also really excited to be competing on a horse which I’ve bred and trained.

‘I’m really looking forward to competing in a team’s event for the first time. You’ve got to try that little bit harder because you’re competing with others and they’re relying on you to do well. It’s a big responsibility but a great honour,” Davidson said.

New South Wales rider Sharon Slater will also have a close eye on the Young Rider competition after daughter Kelly was named in the Australian team. She joins McDermott in the four member outfit as well as Sarah Beale and Nicole Bruggermann who were part of an Australian Young Rider team which toured New Zealand earlier in the year.

The senior team will be supported by Olympian Vicki Roycroft in the role of Chef d’Equipe with Jessica Barton taking on this role for the Young Rider team.

The Oceania Challenge headlines a full four days of jumping action at the Werribee Park National Equestrian Centre. Not since 2005 has Australia had the home ground advantage when taking on New Zealand in a jumping test and both nations will be looking to take an early lead in the two round series which will continue at the Royal Melbourne Show from 26-29 September.

Action at the Australian Show Jumping Championships gets underway on Thursday. For further information on the event please visit http://www.asjc.equestrian.org.au
