Australian Dressage Team Finish 8th

The Australian Dressage Team, led by the performance of Kristy Oatley and Du Soleil, finished in 8th (of 15) position today at the FEI World Equestrian Games behind the all-conquering Germans.

Oatley’s final score of 71.584 % landed her in 27th place overall and qualified her for a prized spot in the Grand Prix Special. She is the only Australian rider to qualify for that class.

After today’s test Oatley said;

“I had mixed feelings with my ride as there were some moments where I thought he was really amazing and all of a sudden we would throw in something that really shouldn’t be there but overall he was great.”

In very hot weather conditions Du Soleil really lifted in front of a large crowd.

“The bigger the atmosphere the more he loves it. He’s been wonderful to ride and a horse that goes with you not against you,” said Oatley.

The most experienced rider on the team, Mary Hanna, and Boogie Woogie 6 also competed today and finished on 68.323%.

“I always knew it would not be easy and the atmosphere was challenging with Boogie but today he was quite good and he got the changes right,” said Hanna.

“He started off super but felt the heat at the end and got a little bit tired.”

Hanna noted the huge Australian contingent that filled the stands to support the team.

“I love to hear the cheer of the Aussies they are incredible supporters. At all the world championships there seem to be more Australians than anyone else and that really lifts you as a rider.”
