What is Vaulting?
Vaulting is a form of gymnastics on horseback, where Athletes or Vaulters perform exercises on a cantering horse guided by a Lunger. It combines elements of both gymnastics and horsemanship, with Vaulters performing as Individuals, Pairs or Team in routines that can include static and dynamic moves such as handstands and cartwheels.
This equestrian discipline is recognised by the the International Federation Equestre (FEI) and is both a competitive and recreational sport with therapeutic benefits for some participants.
In competition (similar to skating and gymnastics) there are compulsory routines as well as freestyle and it is all performed to music, so musical interpretation is also important.
- Performance: Vaulters perform compulsory and freestyle routines, individually, in pairs, or in a squad which can include up to three people on the horse at once.
- Horse & Lunger: Form a Team with the Vaulter/s. The horse moves in a circle on a long rein, guided by a person on the ground called a Lunger
- Equipment: The horse wears a surcingle (roller with handles) and a thick pad instead of a saddle.
- Judging: Vaulters are judged on their form, difficulty, balance, security and technique, with the horse's performance also contributing to the total score.
