Historic Eighth World Title for Boyd Exell and Team Silver for Australia at Aachen

Boyd Exell made history at the FEI World Championships Aachen 2026, claiming an unprecedented eighth consecutive individual World Championship title, while joining fellow Australian Tor van den Berge to secure a historic team silver for Australia in Driving.

The result capped a remarkable championship for Australia’s driving athletes, with Exell and van den Berge producing exceptional performances across Dressage, Marathon and Cones to finish just 2.12 penalties behind gold medallists the Netherlands.

The Netherlands claimed team gold on 315.13 penalties, with Australia finishing on 317.25 and Belgium taking bronze on 325.52.

The result marks a significant step forward for Australia, which claimed team bronze at the 2024 FEI World Championships.

For Exell, the individual victory further cemented his place among the greatest athletes in the history of Driving, extending his extraordinary reign to eight consecutive World Championship titles.

The Australian entered the final Cones phase holding a significant advantage in the individual standings, but the pressure remained immense with the championship and team medals both on the line.

Driving the experienced team of Daan, Hero, Mister Bono van ’t Hooge and 19-year-old Checkmate, Exell delivered when it mattered most. A tiny 0.30 penalty for exceeding the time allowed did little to dent his advantage, with his final score of 142.64 securing another World Championship crown.

As soon as he crossed the finish line, Exell jumped from the driver’s box and ran to his horses, embracing the team that had helped deliver his eighth world title.

“Success like this isn’t possible without the horses. I am incredibly proud of them,” Exell said following his victory.

Asked how long he planned to celebrate, the 54-year-old laughed and replied: “For weeks. Perhaps even the next two years.”

The individual triumph was made even more special by the team result, with Exell and van den Berge carrying Australia’s hopes as a two-driver team throughout the championship.

With just two members making up Australia’s team, there was no room for error for the pair without a buffer third driver score to drop if needed in each phase.

Van den Berge rose to the occasion, producing a strong Dressage performance before tackling the demanding Marathon and Cones phases under immense pressure.

His Dressage test was particularly impressive, with van den Berge scoring 49.31 to sit fifth in the individual standings after the opening phase.

“I’m really happy, that’s the best they’ve done,” van den Berge said following his test. “The atmosphere was electric out there; my right leader held it all together. A couple of little mistakes, but it was super.”

The pair then produced the consistency Australia needed across the Marathon and Cones to remain firmly in medal contention.

For van den Berge, the final Cones phase proved a standout moment of the championship. He positioned himself at the top of the scoreboard for the round before Exell brought it home for Australia, ultimately securing the silver medal.

The achievement continues a remarkable rise for Australian Driving on the international stage.

Just one year ago, Exell and van den Berge made history by becoming the first Australian team to win the prestigious Nations Cup at CHIO Aachen. The pair returned in 2026 with an even bigger target; a World Championship medal and delivered on the biggest stage of all.

For Exell, there was also an element of redemption in finally claiming an Aachen World Championship victory. He missed the 2006 FEI World Equestrian Games in Aachen through injury, making his return to the venue 20 years later particularly significant.

After years of dominance, the Australian legend now has eight consecutive individual World Championship titles to his name – an achievement unprecedented in the sport.
