Paris 2024 Paralympic Equestrian Team Nomination and Qualification Update

With entries now open for 2023 CPEDIs, Equestrian Australia would like to update the community on the status of the Paralympic Team nomination policy.

All Paralympic sports, including equestrian, are yet to publish Paris 2024 nomination policies. This is because Paralympics Australia is yet to release to sports its general requirements for 2024 team nomination, and sports need these in order to draft their respective sport policies. PA is aware of Equestrian Australia’s timelines and has informed EA that the information is not far away from being released.

At the same time, Equestrian Australia is in the final stages of an independent review of the national selection policies and procedures of all its Olympic and Paralympic disciplines. This review was a key recommendation of the Tokyo 2020 Olympic & Paralympic campaign reviews. Due to the tight turnaround between the Tokyo Games and the 2022 World Championships, the review was held over until after the 2022 Championships. Its outcomes could also influence the team nomination policies and procedures for Paris 2024

Once the PA and EA pieces are in place, the 2024 para nomination requirements can be approved and published.

In the meantime, the objective for all para riders for 2023 should be to improve combinations. There are four CPEDIs in Australia this year, and Australian-based riders are encouraged to enter them to put themselves in the strongest possible position for selection.

Importantly, rankings earned through CPEDIs between 1 January 2023 and 31 December 2023 gain Australia team and individual qualification slots for the Paris Games. Without those slots, there will be no equestrian team places to select athletes for!
