Rowan Willis and Carrots Fly High at the Spruce Meadows Masters

Rowan Willis and his magnificent mare Blue Movie, or Carrots as she is better known at home, jumped to second place in one of the most prestigious jumping events in the world over the weekend, the Spruce Meadows Masters CP International Grand Prix in Canada.

Rowan and Carrots jumped a clean first round, with one fence coming down in the second to finish on a total of four faults which was enough to secure them second place behind America’s Beezie Madden riding Darry Lou, with Austria’s Max Kuhner on Chardonnay 79 rounding out the podium places.

“What a day! My girl, my horse of a life time, never ceases to amaze me with her talent and heart. She was fantastic today (Sunday), it was my fault with that rail, we managed to jump the last line, but I couldn’t be happier with her” explained Rowan of his ride in the class.

The course designed by Leopoldo Palacios has a reputation for being one of the toughest Grand Prix’s in the world and also carries an eye-watering amount of prize money. The total prize pool was CAD $3 million, with Rowan walking away with a $600,000 share for second place.

Rowan said his 13-year-old mare, who was bred in Britain by Sue Welch out of Nick Skelton’s former top ride Showtime, and the rest of his team have been enjoying success in North America despite being based in the UK.

“North America has really suited her so I will stay over here and use Spruce Meadows to get ready for Tokyo. I go back to Lexington next week and then down to Florida for the winter." said Rowan of his Tokyo 2020 Olympic preparations.

“This has been an incredible journey, and I love sharing the ups and downs with my team, family, friends, and supporters”.
