Vaccination of horses for participation in events held in purple and red zones in NSW and Queensland

EFA National, Monday, 21 January 2008

Signs are good for an end to the Equine Influenza crisis and the horse movement restrictions and conditions that have come with it.

Plans for a progressive re-zoning of areas in New South Wales and Queensland should be finalised this week. Regardless of the zoning changes over the next couple of months, it is highly likely that horses that are entered in events in the current purple zone in NSW or the red zone in Queensland will have to be vaccinated and microchipped or must be able to demonstrate acquired immunity after recovery from infection with the Equine Influenza virus.

As a consequence, owners/riders particularly from non-infected States and from currently green zones in NSW and Queensland, who wish to participate with in events in purple or red zones in the next few months, particularly before 15 March 2008, should consider having their competition horses vaccinated. Please bear in mind that you must allow at least six weeks before the start of the event for the first vaccination to take place. It is probably best to start eight weeks before.

Note:     Horses must be EFA-registered and have a current performance card.
At this stage, it is only horses entering events in the purple and red zones that should be vaccinated.  If riders/owners have no plans to compete in these zones, they should not request vaccination.  Vaccine supplies are limited.

Procedures to get microchipped and vaccinated vary from State to State (of course) and in some cases still need to be “ironed out”. In principle, however, the following arrangements apply:

NSW and ACT

Riders/owners should download and complete the NSW DPI vaccination application form.

Queensland

Riders/owners should contact their local vet who will give further advice.

Victoria

Riders/owners should contact Vic. DPI Industry Liaison Officer Samantha Forrest on 03 9217 4237.

Tasmania

Please contact Judi le Fevre at the EFA Tasmania Branch Office.

Other States and Territories

Please download the Vaccination Request form including the explanation from www.equestrian.org.au. We need to assess the quantities required, order the respective quantities and finalise arrangements in these various States.

Since the EFA National Office is charged for the vaccines, riders/owners need to pay for the vaccine with the request. The payment is only processed when the vaccine is made available to the authorities or vets in the respective State.
