The Australian combination of Matthew Williams and Leconte improved their already impressive record at the Barcelona CSIO with a fourth place finish in the 50,000 Euro Copa de S.M. la Reina Saturday. The class was won by top international rider Christian Ahlmann on Firth of Clyde of Germany, with Markus Fuchs and Nirmette of Switzerland second and Philippe Leoni and Cyrenaike FRH pf France third. Friday Matt and Leconte maintained their standout performances at the Barcelona CSIO with a seventh place finish in the 100,000 Euro Longines Grand Prix Friday night. As one of 53 combinations from 14 nations to start the class under floodlights, the pair incurred a single rail down in the first round but their time qualified them for the jumpoff of 13 horses. They were to clear in the jumpoff and earned 4,000 Euros for the effort and a rousing cheer from partying crowd enjoying the balmy Mediterranean weather. Thursday Matt Williams and Leconte placed second in the Copa Nespresso speed competition on opening day of the Barcelona CSIO on Thursday, finishing behind Germany's Christian Ahlmann and Firth of Clyde. Williams and James Paterson-Robinson are competing in the four-day event. The final of the eight-nation Samsung Super League is its centerpiece making it one of the most intensely competitive shows in Europe. The losing nation in the final is dropped from the series for the next year.
