2007 EFA Australian and International Showman of the Year
|
Perth WA 8-9 September 2007. No event runs without some kind of behind-the-scenes drama, but with Equine Influenza breaking out just one week prior to the planned date of this event, the Organising Committee had their hands full making an emergency rescheduling happen at all! Due to the one-week postponement, the Organisers found themselves short of half the loan horses and a big rush ensued to find replacement horses in that very short week.
In the EFA Showman competition, riders draw an unknown horse and complete 4 phases after familiarisation time:
* dressage test * ridden show workout * working hunter jumping course * in-hand presentation. The rider is judged on their handling and presentation of their horse.
2007 Australian Showman of the Year – Saturday 8 SeptemberFollowing a huge downpour on Friday night the dressage arena was mostly underwater and Level 2 Course Designer and Saturday’s Working Hunter Judge Kim Lindsay had to do an impromptu course redesign to place the track between the colossal puddles.
Dressage Qld Judge Jan McMillan could see the riders did an excellent job keeping their mounts on course in the conditions. Most horses showed some interesting knee and hock action splashing through the tests. Top 5 - Dressage phase (out of 90)
Ridden Workout SA Judge Frank Bawden had a hard time separating the excellent performances with marks for all 12 riders ranging from 79 to 82.6. Top 5 – Ridden workout (out of 90)
Working Hunter The wet conditions meant WA Judge Kim Lindsay did not wish to see a true hunting pace for obvious safety reasons. Each round was judged on the rider’s approach and style over 8 obstacles. Top 5 –Working Hunter (out of 90)
In-Hand Presentation Vic Judge Gary Beaton was looking at the handler’s skills, their ring craft and their manner. Amy Cleland (Vic) had a perfect score of 90 presenting Farben Park Jazz. Top 5 – In-Hand (out of 90)
FINAL RESULTS It was a tight contest, which it should be when the nation’s top young riders come together. Four riders cracked through the 300 mark barrier to be named the Australian team the following day. Top Place-getters and AUS Team
2007 International Showman of the Year – Sunday 9 SeptemberAfter watching the AUS Final on Saturday, the Singapore team had their fingers crossed to draw the “can-do” Arabian-cross palomino Jahmanah Kindred Spirit or neat chestnut show hunter EK Top Gun on Sunday. Singapore was a young team with exciting experiences under their belts such as the FEI World Children’s Dressage Challenge. The New Zealand team consisted of four accomplished riders with experiences outside the show ring including training at British eventing rider Pippa Funnell’s yard.
Dressage NZL blitzed the dressage taking four of the top 5 places and EP Morgan was again the top horse in this phase. WA Judge Val Mayger had a tough time separating most of the field with just a few points between 1st and 8th. Top 5 - Dressage phase (out of 90)
Ridden Workout NZL Judge Anne Hjorth had a very close top 5. Top 5 – Ridden workout (out of 90)
Working Hunter Saturday’s judge Kim Lindsay set a new course for Sunday which was judged by Geoff Lyall from Qld. Again in this phase the scores were close, especially at the top. This was going to be a tight competition Top 5 –Working Hunter (out of 90)
In-Hand Presentation
Queensland Judge Jan McMillan was looking at the handler’s skills, ring craft and manner. Amy Maskell did an excellent job with End of Days to win this phase just pipping team mate Jessica Stalling. Singapore had a top 5 result in this phase with Jahmanah Kindred Spirit, so they got their wish to draw the pretty part-Arab. Top 5 – In-Hand (out of 90)
FINAL RESULTS
Once again it was a close contest. Until the final scores were counted, nobody could be sure whether NZL or AUS would come out on top. SIN did a wonderful job with four very sweet pool horses and everyone learned a great deal abut international competition. This type of youth development competition is an invaluable training opportunity without the prohibitive expense of international horse transport.
Top Six Place-getters
Horse Owners All the horse owners are to be congratulated for their willingness to loan their horses to this event and provide this marvelous development experience for our international riders of the future.
Horse owners can have a lot of fun at loan horse events and some find them a good opportunity to show the rideability of a horse they have for sale. The owners of Jahmanah Kindred Spirit (aka Gus) had a great weekend and were very proud of their horse:
We would like to let you how much fun we had at the showman weekend. We found the young rider Amy from Qld who rode Gus on Saturday a delightful young woman. Amy’s mother was very friendly and made us feel we were honoree Queensland members. The Singapore team on Sunday was equally friendly and polite.
I thought you ran the event extremely well considering having to reschedule because of the equine flu. If you ever have a similar event we would certainly offer Gus again.
