The new Federal Minister for Agriculture, Fisheries & Forestry, the Hon. Tony Burke MP, took the time yesterday to visit the EFA National Office at Homebush in Sydney

Mr. Burke met with EFA President Geoff Sinclair and CEO Franz Venhaus who presented an overview of the EFA and of Equestrian sport. The main reason for the Minister’s visit was to learn about how the outbreak of Equine Influenza in Australia had impacted on equestrian sport and on Olympic preparations in particular.

The cancellation of many qualification and selection events and the expected slow return in the coming months to a ‘normal’ event calendar in Australia has caused havoc to the EFA High Performance program. It has made it necessary for many riders to consider moving overseas temporarily to continue their Olympic campaign. There they would be able to participate in high-level international competition and gain the necessary qualifications and experience to be considered for selection to the Australian Equestrian Team.

The revised program requires substantial additional funding to be successful. Even if granted, riders will still need to be prepared to make a considerable private contribution and personal sacrifice.

After an earlier approach by the EFA with a detailed funding proposal, Mr Burke has already had discussions with the Minister for Youth and Sport, the Hon. Kate Ellis MP. Following yesterday’s talks, the EFA will now submit a revised application to both Ministers, which addresses a number of aspects raised at the meeting.

Minister Burke was extremely willing to listen and fully understand the position of the EFA. We will be looking forward to working more closely with his Department in the future.
