Biosecurity Education Course - designed to help event organisers

Nicola Turner, EFA National Office, Thursday, 6 March 2008

In conjunction with the Veterinary Advisor Dr Warwick Vale, the EFA has developed a Biosecurity Education Course, designed to educate and train event organisers on necessary biosecurity measures and how best to practically implement them for their events.

As the competition calendar begins to take shape once more it is time to look at the legacy EI has left for event organisers
- biosecurity. There is a need to implement event biosecurity systems and measures for the ongoing protection and health of all horses at events.

In the coming months, NSW, Qld, Vic and SA will each be running a three hour Horse Heath Steward / Biosecurity Awareness Course for all event organisers, event committees, stewards and interested persons.

The course will be presented by local FEI Veterinarians and cover the roles and responsibilities of the event organisers, Horse Health Stewards (HHS), owners and riders and how to best implement good biosecurity measures.

The Horse Heath Steward (HHS) is one such measure;  a check point or quality control person trained to identify any symptoms and notify the appropriate authority at the event. The HHS role will be a vital cog in the wheel by ensuring good communication between the local / appointed Veterinarian, the Chief Steward and the Ground Jury regarding any biosecurity issues.

This course is a must for anybody involved in running events, irrespective of the size.  The courses are open to anyone who would like to attend.

Confirmed Course Dates so far are as follows
  • NSW - Wednesday, 2 April from 5.00pm to 8.00pm at the Sydney International Equestrian Centre
  • Vic - Saturday, 10 May from 2.00pm to 5.00pm at the Werribee Park Equestrian Centre (note the date has been changed from 12 April)
