Nicola Turner, EFA National Office, Wednesday, 5 March 2008 “What doesn’t kill us makes us stronger,” said Vicki Roycroft this morning at the official launch by the EFA NSW of the Return of the Horse at the Domain in Sydney.
Officially “launching” the Return of the Horse was NSW Minister for Sport and Recreation the Hon. Graham West. Minister West invited the public to celebrate and enjoy the biggest horse event in Australia since the 2000 Olympics. The launch was also attended by NSW Minister for Primary Industries the Hon. Ian Macdonald, Gold Medalist Stuart Tinney, Olympians Vicki Roycroft and Rachel Sanna and Beijing Olympic Team hopeful Shane Rose. EFA NSW Chairman David Lawrence got the proceedings under way welcoming the guests and introducing the Ministers.
The launch attracted a good turnout of media and provided a fabulous opportunity to promote the upcoming equestrian events and also to highlight the effects of EI on our Olympic preparations. Thanks to Shane and Rachel who were aboard horses which added a sense of authenticity and also great photo opportunities for the press.
Minister MacDonald thanked the EFA for collaborating with the government through out the EI crisis. The NSW Government has provided $300,000 to aid in the recovery of the equestrian competitions.
Vicki Roycroft, who spoke on behalf of the riders was asked if EI had possibly cost Australia an Olympic medal, Roycroft replied, “For sure, but don’t give up on us either, I for one seem to thrive on adversity and most of my team mates are like that too.” It had been “staggeringly difficult” for everyone in the industry commented Roycroft “but we survived and we are about to get going again.”
Minister Macdonald acknowledged that “It is clear that EI will have will have a negative impact (on our Olympic Team)," but noted that we but we have “such resolution and resilience in our equestrian field,” that he is confident for good results in Hong Kong. “We wish them well.” said Macdonald.
Well done to EFA NSW for organising the successful launch and the Return of the Horse series of events.
