Having moved into the lead after the cross-country and after Angela Shacklady's 'All Luck' ridden by Shane Rose did not pass the Horse Inspection, Sonja and Ringwould Jaguar held on in the Jumping Test.

Monday, 21 April 2008

Sonja Johnson and Ringwould Jaguar have won the Sydney CCI 3* Three-Day Event.  Sonja had two rails in hand after Megan Jones on Kirby Park Irish Jester had a rail at fence number one, in an otherwise beautiful round.  Sonja and Jaguar finished their show jumping with four faults to win the event by 6.5 penalties.

"Australian Stock Horses are known for their toughness and durability, Jag exemplifies those qualities," said Sonja of her 16-year-old mount.
Sonja plans to stay with Jag in Victoria until the Olympic Team is announced on 04 July, preferring not to travel the horse all the way back to Western Australia.

Australian Eventing Coach, Wayne Roycroft, said the event had been excellent, except for Shane Rose, who is now required to compete at the Melbourne Three-Day Event in June to qualify for the Olympic Games and be available for selection after All Luck failed the Sunday morning vet inspection.

"It is a  great shame for Shane," commented Roycroft.
"He is a great rider and it is a great horse, the Australian team needs riders and horses of that calibre, we will have to see what happens at Melbourne."

"Lucky had a small overreach," said a devastated Shane Rose. "It is something that could be better by tomorrow, that's life."

Wendy Schaeffer proved just how consistent she is with her three horses, Koyuna Sun Shine, Koyuna Sun Magic and Koyuna Sun Dancer finishing third, fourth and fifth.  Wendy had just one rail down on Sun Shine and jumped clear on her other two horses.

Wendy had also been competing in the Australian Showjumping Championships throughout the weekend.  After finishing her three CCI 3* horses Wendy rode in the Grand Prix final on Koyuna Sun Set finishing second in the Senior Championships cumulative point-score behind Chris Chugg.

Kevin McNab won the CCI 2* class on the impressive Contango II stallion Belcam Caesar.  Sonja Johnson was second and third on her own Le Directeur and Parkiarrup Illicit Liason, both seven-year-old throughbreds.

Kevin McNab also won the CCI 1* on John Healey's six year old mare, Kinnordy Galera.  Rachel Lee was second on Hunter Hill, a 10-year-old by Stirling Sprite and third place went to Indonesian rider Asep Mulliwan on Aswatama Davine Story.

The CCN Pre Novice class was won by Georgia Clifford riding seven-year-old Kolora Stud Falkrich II.  Second place went to Brett Davey riding the Gymnastik Star gelding, Goolcoola Montage and in third place was Hamish Cargill on the five-year-old chestnut Bel Canto.

Bad luck for ' All Luck' and Shane Rose, good luck to Sonja Johnson and Ringwould Jaguar

Great disappointment for overnight leader, Shane Rose as his horse All Luck failed to pass the vet check this morning in the CCI 3* class. Sonja Johnson and Ringwould Jaguar have therefore gone in to the lead on a score of 45.6 penalties.  In third position is Megan Jones and Kirby Park Irish Jester (52.1), followed by Wendy Schaeffer whose three horses Koyuna Sun Shine, Koyuna Sun Magic and Koyuna Sun Dancer are now in  third, fourth and fifth positions respectively.

Today's showjumping phase will determine the overall winner.

Shane Rose will now need to compete at the Melbourne International Three-Day Event in June in a last attempt to qualify for the Olympic Games.

Judges, Cara Whitham, Barry Roycroft and Pollyanne Huntington were in agreement that Shane and “Lucky” were the best performed combination of the day collectively awarding them just 38.9 penalties (74.06%)

“I was really happy with the test,” said Shane.

“The trot work was good, he got a little tense in the walk before the halt, there is still plenty to work on, but I am pleased with him and also with the score.”

Megan Jones and Kirby Park Irish Jester finished a close second with 41.3 penalties (72.46%). A lovely test by the little grey but a small hiccup in the medium trot may have cost her the premiere position on day-one of the competition.

In third place was Sonja Johnson from West Australia and Ringwould Jaguar on 42.0 penalties (72.03%). Olivia Bunn and the 17.2hh GV Bullwinkle are in fourth place on 45.4 penalties (69.71%). Christopher Burton rounded off the top five on Newsprint with 46.3 penalties (69.13%).

With the dressage completed the riders are now gearing up for thr cross-country course.  Designed by Wayne Copping, the course is a true three star test and it will be a deserving combination who are in the lead at the end of tomorrow’s competition. According to Olympic Coach Wayne Roycroft, the cross-course “Provides its own unique challenges.”

Shane Rose says “It is a good course and will be a good test.”

In the CCI 2* competition,  the dressage leaders are Deon Stokes and BML Blueprint on 49.8 penalties (66.81%) ahead of Emma Mason on Kitara Diamond Edition 51.7 penalties (65.56%). In third place is Sam Lyle and Scribbly Park Sorcerer with 51.9 penalties (65.42%).

Kevin McNab is leading the CCI 1* dressage on Kinnordy Galera with 44.8 penalties (70.16%). Rachel Lee and Hunter Hill are hot on his heals with 45.5 penalties (69.68%). Tarsha Hammond is in third position on Rio Lobo on 48.3 penalties (67.78%).
