Chris Chugg and Vivant National Jumping Champions
In a nail-biting finish, Chris Chugg and Vivant became the stars of the 2007 ISS EFA Australian Jumping Championships, held at the Sydney International Equestrian Centre in April 2008 after the original dates had to be cancelled following the outbreak of Equine Influenza. In Sunday's Grand Prix Chris Chugg and Vivant were challenged to a jump-off against 22-year-old Julia Hargreaves and Copabella Haymen . Chugg jumped faultlessly in wet sloppy conditions to win the Grand Prix and also the Australian Senior Showjumping Championship. Julia was unlucky to have the last fence down in only her first year of senior competition.
Chugg was leading the Senior Championship point-score going into Sunday's competition and was determined not to let "Eventer" Wendy Schaeffer win the title. Wendy finished second in Senior Championship on Koyuna Sun Set. It was a quick change of horse for Wendy as she rode out of the prize giving for the CCI 3* Three-Day Event - where she placed third, fourth and fifth - moments before cantering into the Grand Prix arena.
Vicki Roycroft and Noblewood Park Blatini finshed third in the Australian Senior Championship. Chugg said "Vivant felt great, much better than at Sydney," where he thought the horse had been under-worked.
The combination will leave for Germany in early May to take part in the two Olympic nomination events held there. The Young Rider Championship was won by Belinda Prestwidge riding Mister Chips. Second place went to Danielle Butcher and HP Landsong ahead of Hilary Scott and Oaks Miss Scarlett who finished third.
