Phillip Dutton & Connaught win Rolex Kentucky 4-Star - Boyd =9th, Cammy 11th

Jim Dunn, Thursday, 24 April 2008

Roving reporter Jim Dunn reports from the Rolex Kentucky Three-Day Event.

Sunday, 27 April 2008

Phillip Dutton, now riding for the USA, won the prestigious Rolex Kentucky Three-Day Event CCI**** and is now on top of the leaderboard for the new HSBC FEI Classics series. The combination had a clear final jumping round to take the title by just under 7 points. Becky Holder, who led into the jumping test by just under 2 points, had 2 rails down to give Phillip his first Four-Star win (we believe) after having been second at Kentucky on five other occasions.

Boyd Martin, following a heavy fall at the water on Ying-Yang-Yo during the Cross Country yesterday afternoon, was given a medical clearance following CAT scans last evening, finished in =9th place with Neville Bardos, having had 3 jumping faults and 2 time penalties during the Jumping test and finishing as the highest placed foreign rider.

Cammie O’Rourke riding Kirby Park Irish Jamie, accumulated the same penalties as Boyd during the jumping phase, to ultimately finish in 11th place, an outstanding result for this up and coming 23 year old.

Both Boyd Martin with Neville Bardos and Cammy O’Rourke with Kirby Park Irish Jamie improved their position on the leaderboard after the cross-country test. They are now in =7th and in 8th place, respectively. Unfortunately, however, Boyd had to retire Ying-Yang-Yo. You can download the leaderboard in PDF format here.

Jim Dunn reports:

Cammy did a really great effort this being her first major CCI overseas. In the morning the first half ran and the weather was fairly mild and many horses finished clear on time but then there was a two-hour lunch break and after lunch the weather got warmer. Those after lunch seemed to have more troubled and only had a few clear on time.

Neville Bardos went well for Boyd and showed that he may be a horse for the future.

Ying-Yang-Yo went well upto the lake and made a big jump at the second brush into the water and Boyd had a mistake and was hit in the head by the horse's neck and fell. The horse was okay, though.

It was good that both Boyd and Cammy had a crack at the time.

Both horses presented well at our trot tonight and looked like they will be okay in the morning at 8.30 am.

Dressage is now complete. Cammy O'Rourke and Kirby Park Irish Jamie are in 11th place with 52.6 and Boyd in 14th and =18th position. You can download the leaderboard in PDF format here. There is also story that mentions someone called Phillip Dutton, who is presently in third place. See link below.

Boyd Martin and Neville Bardos were our first to trot up and they were asked to represent – which they did successfully.

Boyd’s second ride Ying Yang Yo and Cammy O’Rourke’s Kirby Park Irish Jamie both passed without trouble.

The cross-country is the usual Mike Etherington-Smith masterpiece and has quite a few questions. The first four fences are big and straightforward and then he asks questions with corners and a sunken road combination.

The length of the course is 11 minutes and at the moment the ground is firm and they are aerating the ground but storms are due on Friday and this could make the going perfect.
