Surprises and excitement at the Team Jumping Final
USA wins Team Gold from Canada in a jump-off. Edwina has a clear round, Laurie has the ride of his lifetime, Matt has bad luck in the ring and Peter breaks a collarbone in the practice ring. The second round of the Team Jumping competition could hardly have been more exciting. The leaderboard changed progressively as the next rotation of riders started their rounds. The evening began with the riders whose teams had not qualified to progress into the second round and who had place 50th or better in the Individual classification. Team riders followed in order of Team standing, with Germany first, Australia second and the USA last. There was a long wait for Peter McMahon, the second rider in this section. First reports suggested that he would start later because Genoa had pulled a shoe. Later, the combination was announced but horse and rider in the arena were quite different and the starting bell had to be reset. It was confirmed in the end that Peter and Genoa had had a fall in the practice ring ant that Peter had broken a collarbone. There would be no start in this section. Laurie Lever and Drossel Dan had the ride of their lifetime with only 4 faults, putting them in 29th place in the Individual competition with a total of 21 penalties. Well done, Laurie and Drossel Dan! Edwina Alexander and Itot du Chateau had a brilliant faultless round, ending up in equal 2nd place overall with a total of four faults. The pressure was then on Matt Williams and Leconte 6. Unfortunately, they incurred 16 jump penalties and 1 time penalty, placing them in 36th position with a total of 25 faults. This is just outside the 35 allowed to compete in the Individual Final but since the USA have four riders listed here and can enter only three, Matt's place is assured. Congratulations to our Team! A great result as it is. One rail less would put Australia into equal seventh place, but then, one rail less would have had Canada the winners ….. More photos later. FEI story. | |
