Another Bronze for Australia

Thursday 11 September

It was another day of sitting on the edge of our seats with both Nicole Kullen and Sharon Jarvis still in the medal hunt with one horse to go!

In the end Nicole was placed 4th in the Grade IB Freestyle and Sharon 7th in the same event for Grade III.

We started the day with Jan Pike riding Northern Griffin in the Grade IA test. Jan rode accurately but the competition was strong. She placed 9th. Then Nicole rode a free flowing test and was placed first after the morning session of 7 riders.

Grace also rode in the Grade IB test and again her horse was a little overwhelmed by the occasion. Grace rode beautifully to complete her sequence of movements but we always knew that the judges would not score the resistance in evidence highly. Grace was placed 12th overall.

The evening saw the the continuation of the Grade IB test and Nicole was placed 3rd with just the Brazillian horse to come. Unfortunately our celebrations were short lived as the last rider scored 1% more than Nicole leaving her in 4th place.

The final rider for the competition was our Sharon Jarvis. Sharon knew the scores to beat and went in determined to ride her best.

Odorado powered into the arena and make a great impression on everyone. Sharon then proceeded to give it all she had and then some.

Odie responded but the judges remained only moderatley impressed giving her an overall score of 69.446%. Although it was Sharon`s best score for the competition she still was hoping to medal after coming 4th in the previous event.

Still there were many great outcomes from the Games. We achieved two Bronze medals, two 4th places and a team 6th.

Our team worked well together and it was great having our own vet this time.

It is onto Beijing now to meet up with the rest of the Australian Paralympic Team and participate in the closing ceremony.

Georgia Wins 2nd Bronze Medal!!

In her final competition event Georgia rode with finesse to win another Bronze Medal.

After 10 riders she was the first to top 74%. But soon after two more athletes passed her mark. With hearts in our mouths we waited to see the score of the final rider to find out if she medalled. The Aussie supporters erupted when the final results were announced.

Tuesday  09 September

The Individual Championship Tests continued today with Grade III, IA and IB competing. Another mixed day for the Aussies ensued. Sharon Jarvis rode extremely well to just miss out on a medal by placing in 4th position in the Grade III competition. Sharon increased her percentage score on yesterday by 7%.

Jan fired Griffin up a little too much and suffered the consequences for trot steps on the score line. Jan now has a chance to even the score in her final competition on Thursday.

Monday 08 September
Last night in the team competition we put in good performances. Our first two rider’s mounts were extremely tense and proved difficult to get their usual flowing movements from. Nicole and Grace rode extremely well to complete their test with good scores. Nicole scored 60.235% (6th) and Grace 58.235% (7th).  Georgia rode magnificantly to score 67.571% and end up in 3rd place just 0.2% behind second.

Half way through the team competition Australia is ranked 8th.
In first place is Great Britain followed by Germany and Norway.
It is unlikely Australia will now medal in the team event but we do expect to improve our ranking by the end of proceedings on Tuesday night.

Monday 01 September
Our Para-equestrian team is gearing up for the Paralympic Games.  Five horses and riders;  Jan Pike (Northern Griffin), Nicole Kullen (Nikshar Nomination), Grace Bowman (Yarra Valley Mount Batton), Georgia Bruce (Victory Salute) and Sharon Jarvis (Applewood Odorado) will represent Australia in Hong Kong.  Emma Bennett (Jaybee Leuwin) is the reserve rider.

Five horses (including the non-travelling reserve horse) went into Pre-Export Quarantine in Tonimbuk, Victoria on 18 August whilst Victory Salute was quarantined in Aachen, Germany.

The horses and riders have now arrived safely in Hong Kong and are preparing for the start of competition.  The Para-equestrian events start on 07 September and finish on 11 September.

The four riders compete in the team competition with the best three scores counting toward the team score.  The classes are graded in to five levels according to the level of the rider’s disability.  Each team must include one rider of Grade I or Grade II – the highest level of disability.

All five riders also compete in the Individual Championship and the Freestyle (Kur).  Medals are awarded for each grade of disability for both of these events.

Our team is a mixture of experience and youth.  Jan Pike was on the Team in Athens in 2004 where she rode Dr Doulittle and won Silver and Bronze medals.  The other team members including and 18-year-old Grace Bowman will be making their Paralympic debut.

On 14 September the team and support staff will fly to Beijing to take part in the Closing Ceremony.

We wish our team all the best for the Games.
