Edwina Alexander is currently ranked 10th in the FEI Jumping World Rankings. This is the first time Edwina has been in the top 10 and the highest ever ranking for an Australian (achieved only once before by Jeff McVean).
The FEI top 10 is highly respected in Europe and where all riders want to be. We talked to (a very busy) Edwina to find out her daily routine and her plans for the rest of 2008.
“My plan for the rest of the year is the Global Champions Tour Final in Sao Paulo Brazil. It is €1,000,000 prize money for the one competition and for the whole show its nearly €2,000,000. So that's an important goal to try to win the final. I'm now standing 3rd after the last leg of the Global Champions Tour leading into the final.”
Edwina was placed in six GCT Grand Prix classes this season between her two horses Itot du Chateau and Isovlas Socrates.
I'm going to try to do some World Cups though I have to get a wild card for every show. And then I have to qualify for the qualifier to qualifiy for the final! Very confusing and unfortunately I was one month too late getting to the FEI top 10. If I was 10th in August then I would be pre-qualified for all the World Cups until the end of the year and for next year the list from December counts.
So even being number 10 doesn't get me qualified for the World Cups though it is more the privilege.
It was my goal to get to the top 10 by the end of the year! So I'm ahead of myself!!
I would really love to ride in the final of the FEI top 10 at Brussels CSI 5* in November. So basically to stay in the 10 I need to keep on getting good results.
I have Socrates and Itot who are my best horses. Without these horses and Jan’s programme I wouldn't be where I am today.
I have some very good young horses and a few new ones on board. It is very important to have some new and young horses coming up.
Pialotta is now officially retired and we have got 3 embryos from her this year so next year will be very exciting and hopefully in 10 years even more exciting.
Until the end of the year I think I have only 2 weekends where I don't show so it is very intense and a lot of travelling. I will have to split up my team with Socrates and Itot with some other friends so they can rest between shows. At the important shows they will be together.
My daily programme is basically get up at 7am and start riding at 8am. I ride up to 8 horses a day depending on what I have to do. Some days if I have time I will ride my horses twice but it depends on how many other horses I have. I then do work in the office and I'm finished around 7pm depending on clients etc.
I do teach sometimes but not too many people. I try to concentrate on my own horses and my programme. Maybe when I'm older I will train more clients.
I do many different things in our business. I go with clients to see horses or I go to try horses myself and video them to show Jan. We have many people calling and telling us about horses for us to see and try but its not easy finding the right ones.
We also receive a lot of DVDs of horses and Thomas who is Jan’s right hand is full time on the road looking for horses!
During my time with Jan I have really learnt what a good horse needs and it takes seeing a lot of videos, trying many horses and having a lot of explanation . But it is very interesting for me to think of what I used to think was a good horse 10 years ago and what I think now. That's a bit scary and it takes a long time to see this also with the very young ones. I can see a lot in them already when they are 2 years old and before I thought every horse in Europe was a good horse!”
This weekend Edwina competes in Deauville (FRA) where they compete for 200,000 euros!
Good luck Edwina!
