Results and report from our Team in Seoul (KOR)
A week in Seoul South Korea for the International Business Group Equestrian Games will be long remembered by the members of the Australian Team. Jim Scobie, the Team's Chef d'Equipe reports.
Monday 27 October:
The Games were conducted at the Seoul Olympic Equestrian Park in KRA and consisted of Debbie Ross from Greendale in Victoria, Cindy Morrison from Officer in Victoria, Rachael Gane also from south of the border and Kim Lindsay a sand groper from the Perth region. The initial competition was an individual event over two rounds and the girls showed their experience and skills on borrowed horses to have two riders finish in the top five with double clear rounds and very competitive times. They were Kim Lindsay aboard Alipso a Warm Blood Gelding and Rachael Gane riding Times Right an ex Australian thoroughbred eventer. Cindy and Debbie had very credible rounds with two rails and one rail respectively, and set themselves up for a very solid performance in the Team Event on the following day. There were twenty six riders in total for the individual event. The Team Event was a real success for the Australians with an overall second place and only a small time difference separating them from the Japanese riders. In a one-round table C competition the four Aussie riders only dropped one rail to be equal with the Japanese team after the three best rounds were compiled. However the Japanese who had the winner of the individual event, Takahiko Kawauehi, in their squad were a little slick in the combined total of their times and relegated
The standard of horses was high with a mixture of Australian and European Warmboods in the pool.
The Organising Committee also ran a competition in memory of Mr Kim Hyung-Chil who passed away in an accident in 2006 as a result of an Eventing fall. Three Australian riders were assigned new horses for the competition and Rachael Gane showed how adaptable she was by taking out the event. There were 21 competitors in a one-round speed event and Rachael was the fastest rider on Stephen with no penalties added. Our other riders were also very competitive and finished close to the top of the leader board.
The team was treated to a wide range of traditional foods, entertainment, ceremonies and warm hospitality by the Korean Equestrian Federation and the Organising Committee of the International Business Group Equestrian games, who made sure the Australian visitors, experienced some of the long history and traditional culture of the Korean people.
In the words of the most seasoned of travellers Bill and Ted, “This was a most excellent adventure and we could recommend 24 October 2008: Individual Competition results from our Team competing at the International Business Group Equestrian Competition, Seoul Rachael Gane, Cindy Morris, Debbie Ross and Kim Lindsay make up the team of four riders who have travelled to Seoul, Korea.
