The Harry Le Bherz Trophy Champion State Team
The 2008 winner for the Harry Le Bherz Trophy Champion State Team is Queensland at the Horseland EFA Australian Interschool Equestrian Championships
Jane Summers - Event Director reports, Monday, 6 October 2008

03-05 October saw a successful event held at the Toowoomba Showgrounds

The organising committee for the 2008 Horseland EFA Australian Interschool Championships would like to extend a vote of thanks for all the support and assistance provided by our sponsors and supporters in the running and planning of this event.  The committee would also like to thank the EFA office for their support in allowing us to host the inaugural championships.  This decision was very brave considering there was no precedent for determining risk and the likelihood of success except for our reputations and vision.

As you may now know the event was most successful from many different perspectives.  Firstly, the Queensland team (some 100 riders participated) won the overall trophy as the best performing state team over the weekend and this was a great honour for those riders who performed and the support staff who assisted them.

Secondly, our nomination numbers, whilst lower than we had originally budgeted, were satisfactory to meet both sponsor requirements and financial commitments.  In addition we had representation from every state and territory (admittedly only one rider from Tasmania – but they were still there!).  This meant that the event met its charter and objectives of bringing together the best interschool riders from around the country to compete at a high level of equestrian sport.  We had 279 nominations for the weekend and this represented about 250 riders.  Thirdly, the event made a small profit and this satisfied the financial performance measures that we used as part of our budget and planning processes.

Finally the event attracted national and local media attention.  We had a number of articles in the local Toowoomba Chronicle, there were 2 news stories on WIN television over the weekend, the local 4GR radio station hosted interviews with organisers and ran advertisements about eh event over the weekend and each day 30 photos were posted to the Horsedeals Gallery.  In addition there was a full page advertisement in Horsedeals prior to the event and some press about the event in the month prior.  So from a PR perspective the event was also successfully promoted and our sponsors recognised for their support and involvement.

As you may know we managed to gain approval for an alteration for the use of funding support originally promised from Queensland Events for the championship that was to be held in 2007.  In addition we also secured the financial support of Horseland as the naming rights sponsor for the event (an agreement they have secured for the next 3 years).

These funding sources along with financial assistance from EFA and from the QISEA meant that the championships were financially secure and we had a solid revenue base from which to operate.  The fact that we made a small profit is testament to the organising committee and the support of local Toowoomba media and the regional council.

Feedback from our state competitors and the judges and officials who attended the event has been overwhelmingly positive.  Many of our interstate competitors commented on the professionalism of the event, the “grandness” of it and the quality of the judging, competition and the facilities.  Our judges and officials were also complementary and there were no problems with results, presentations or scoring which made for a smooth operation.

In closing the committee would like to thank the EFA Board for the opportunity of being involved in this event.  Being the first was very special and from all accounts we have set a high benchmark for other states to now follow.  In future years if Queensland is to win the hosting rights for the event again, we would be very confident of being able to host another successful competition and of our riders performing at such a high standard.

Congratulations to all competitors!
