2009 AUSTRALIAN INTERNATIONAL 3 DAY EVENT SET TO RIDE AGAIN!

The 2009 Australian International 3 Day Event appears to have been saved with tens of thousands of dollars being pledged by equestrian enthusiasts and public supporters from all across Australia and around the world.

Event director – and dual Olympian – Mrs Gill Rolton said she was thrilled by the incredible generosity that the event had attracted since making the announcement three weeks ago that the 2009 Adelaide event was facing the axe because of a budget shortfall..

“The response has been nothing short of extraordinary,” she said, “and based on the pledges that we’ve received so far, the Board of management now feels confident we have the financial backing to proceed.”

The 2009 Australian International 3 Day Event will be held in the Adelaide parklands from November 13 to 15 and this year will also host the hotly contested Trans Tasman Championship.

Chairman of the not-for-profit Board of the Adelaide Horse Trials Management Inc which runs the AI3DE – Bob Gillen – said the event was still looking for a “naming rights” sponsor and would continue to work hard to attract new corporate supporters as well.

“We’re extremely grateful to all of those who’ve already made such a passionate plea for the survival of the event and obviously we would be delighted to accept any further donations or pledges of support,” he said.

“The South Australian Government’s ongoing and increased support, through the South Australian Tourism Commission, has been critical to the continuation of the event. We’re very grateful for that, as we are for the support from our long time sponsors Equestrian Australia, the Adelaide City Council, Adelaide Equity Partners and Channel 7.”

Mr Gillen said the Board was now determined to expand the event’s Trade Village, and Corporate Hospitality Marquee and various other attractions to build on the Board’s vision of making the Australian International 3 Day Event a major drawcard.

“We’re thrilled to see the South Australian community vote with their wallets – even in these tough times - to support keeping a great South Australian event here in our State. We can’t say thank you enough.”

The highly regarded Australian International 3 Day Event is the only Olympic 4* Equestrian competition in the Southern Hemisphere and one of only six in the world, taking its place alongside Badminton and Burghley in the United Kingdom, Kentucky in the US, Pau in France and Luhmuhlen in Germany.

SHOW YOUR SUPPORT AND HELP THE AUSTRALIAN INTERNATIONAL 3 DAY EVENT SURVIVE

After the announcement the Australian International 3 Day Event was in jeopardy due to a budget shortfall, Gillian Rolton, Event Director of the AI3DE said the show of support from the equestrian community and general public this week had been amazing.

“While we have not yet secured a major sponsor for the Australian International 3 Day Event we have had many people wanting to donate money to assist in reducing the budget shortfall,” said Mrs Rolton.
“All we need is 2000 people to donate $50 each and we will have the funds to run this year’s event.”
Equestrian enthusiasts are being asked to show their support by donating much needed funds to the 2009 Australian International 3 Day Event to ensure the event is run this year.
Oopy MacGillivray (nee Kimpton), previously a high level event rider, has come up with the idea of the ‘Australian International 3 Day Event Survival Fund’.
“If everyone who has ridden at or enjoyed being involved with either the Gawler or Adelaide 3 Day Events can donate a little it will go a long way to keeping this event alive,” said Oopy.
“Wittalocka Angus and the MacGillivray Family have kicked things off with a $1,000 donation to the Australian International 3 Day Event Survival Fund and I urge all other horsey people to make a small donation.”
“We would like to thank the generosity of the MacGillivray family and Oopy for the fantastic show of support to keep the AI3DE event alive,” said Ms Rolton.
“Although we have only just begun the ‘Survival Fund’ we are getting a huge response from the ‘Equestrian family’ locally and interstate and this goes to show the large level of support for this fantastic event.”

2009 AUSTRALIAN INTERNATIONAL 3 DAY EVENT FACING CANCELLATION

The 2009 Australian International 3 Day Event looks set not to proceed this November, thanks to a squeeze on corporate sponsorship and a $100,000 budget shortfall.
The event has been scheduled to be held in Adelaide’s parklands on November 13 to 15, but according to Event Director – dual Olympian - Gillian Rolton, it now appears the event will not be able to go ahead.
“It’s a bitter disappointment, but faced with the financial realities of 2009 we’re being forced to make an extraordinarily tough decision. Unless an extremely generous benefactor - or naming rights sponsor - is prepared to come forward with significant financial support, we will have no option other than cancelling this year's event.
“We’re having to make the call now because so many of our top class and international riders depend on the Australian International 3 Day Event as part of their qualifying and selection path for the World Equestrian Games in Kentucky in 2010 and potentially the Olympics in London in 2012 and it’s only fair we give them enough notice to make alternative qualifying arrangements”, she said.
"The 2009 Australian International 3 Day Event was also set to host the hotly contested Trans Tasman Championship, so its cancellation is a double blow"
The not-for-profit Board of the Adelaide Horse Trials Management Inc which runs the AI3DE said it was extremely grateful for the ongoing support of all of its sponsors, in particular its major partner, the South Australian Government through the South Australian Tourism Commission as well as the Department of Sport and Recreation, Equestrian Australia, the Adelaide City Council, Adelaide Equity Partners and Channel 7.
Board Chairman, Bob Gillen said the 2008 event had been a breakthrough success and plans had been in place to grow the event even further.
“Unfortunately, we’re in the same position as many other sporting events and clubs which rely heavily on corporate sponsorship. It’s tough out there”, he said.
SATC Chief Executive Andrew McEvoy said he was disappointed by the news.
"We have been big supporters of the 3 Day Event since it came to Adelaide's parklands in 1997. It really has added to our events calendar at the right time of the year and it's disappointing that it won't go ahead this year due to lack of corporate support."
