Wendy Schaeffer wins the CCI3* at Lakes and Craters

Wendy and Koyuna Sun Magic
2008 Melbourne 3DE
Nicola Turner, Monday, 7 December 2009

Wendy Schaeffer capped off her Eventing season with a win at Camperdown CCI3* on her 13-year-old chestnut Koyuna Sun Magic and third place on Koyuna Sun Dancer last weekend.

In what has been a super-human effort by Wendy this year she also won Sydney CCI3*, Camperdown CIC3*, Gawler World Cup qualifier (Jumping) and the Grand Prix at the Australian Show Jumping Championships. Wendy was also awarded the Anna Savage medal for best and fairest event rider for 2009 at the Adelaide 3DE.

Wendy won the Dressage (46.9) but 12.4 time faults let Shane Rose take the lead after the cross-country following a blistering round on the 7-year-old Taurus. Shane was the only rider to make the time however it may have taken its toll as three disappointing rails on Sunday handed the class back to Wendy who jumped clear and forced Shane to settle for second place. Shane was also 5th on APH Moritz (also just 7 years-of-age) and 8th on the black stallion Statford Novalis in the field of 10 competitors. Hamish Cargill finished in 4th place on the 10-year-old thoroughbred Powderhound.
There were just two competitors in the CIC3* West Australian Sophie Warren and Let’s Impress who took home the win and Robyn Brown who retired I’m Charles Too on course.
Katja Weimann continued her winning streak on the lovely Daley K gelding Pluto Mio in the CCI 2*. Katja also won the Melbourne CCI1* in June and was second at the CCI2* at Adelaide in November on the 11-year old grey. Kevin McNab and the Gymnastik Star mare Kinnordy Galera finished in 2nd place. Christopher Burton finished third on the experienced Unrepentant.
Christopher Burton won the CCI1* on Haruzac – another combination who are becoming very familiar with the winner’s podium. 7-year-old Haruzac (Gwaihirs Zodiac) also won the Pre Novice at Sydney Three-day Event and was 2nd in the CCI1* at the NSW State Championships in October and boasts wins at Scone and Wagga horse trials. Kevin McNab and She’s a Cruiser finished 2nd and third place went to Carlene Barton on APH Meander.
