Matthew and Claudia Harper's mare Cinderella got a terrific third place in the Freestyle to Music at their first European CDI 3-Star in Stadl Paura, Austria.

With 73.08% from a Ground Jury that included four FEI O-Level Judges (the only lower-level "International" judge seemed to be out of line with her marks), this is an absolutely marvellous result. Matthew's trainer Ulla Salzgeber, who had a few problems with her horse, finished 7th with 70.99%. Full results.

Congratulations, Matthew.

Here are some "flash quotes" from Matthew:
  • "I was really thrilled with her. The atmosphere in the packed hall was great. I came in straight after Holga Finken to lots of applause. It was fantastic. Cinders barely touched the ground.  There were lots of 'umms’ and 'ahs' from the crowd."
  • "You know it makes it so much easier with the consistent help, as I have been getting from Ulla"
  • "Thanks, EFA and Deborah MacNicol, for introducing Ulla Salzgeber to our country & thanks to Claudia Harper, my long time supporter, for having the patience & believing in her beautiful mare. When you are so far from home, it makes one very proud when you are told often by so many Germans what a wonderful horse you have."

The marks awarded by the individual judges all qualified Matthew and Cinderella for the World Cup Dressage Final, which starts later this week in Amsterdam.  It is a great pity they can't go ....

After the Grand Prix, Matthew said: "I am thrilled with the way Cinders is going.  She has raised a few eyebrows." Well, with the freestyle behind them, he must be elated.

A panel of five FEI O-Level judges awarded the combination a score of 65.71% in the Grand Prix putting them in 7th place in a field of 33. Ulla Salgeber won that class with her horse First Finley and a score of 71.54%, almost 3.5% more than the next-placed rider.

Emma Hindle (GBR) and Lancet won the Grand Prix for Special in a field of 30.

The number of entries at Grand Prix level demonstrates the popularity of this show, which will host the European Championships for Juniors and Young Riders later this year.
