Hendra virus (formerly known as equine morbillivirus) was diagnosed in a horse that was euthanased at Murwillimbah in NSW late October. This was the first time infection of a horse with Hendra virus that has been reported outside Queensland.
Hendra virus infection of horses is a rare occurrence but is significant because the virus can potentially infect humans. Close contact with infected body fluids from a sick horse can cause infection and death. Fortunately such transmission is very uncommon. However, care to prevent transfer of infectious agents should always be taken when handling ANY sick horse and when performing post mortem examinations.
