Each month we introduce you to a member of the EA team. It's fun, a little bit serious and maybe more interesting than you’d expect...

Introducing Equestrian Australia team member

Alisha Sixtus

Athlete Pathways Administrator

What’s your favourite horse breed and horse colour?

My favourite breed is the Lusitano. They’re not generally medal winners in any discipline as a breed, but there are some doing very well in Dressage, and the ones I have met have been really interesting, unique horses.

Although it’s fleeting, dapple grey is my favourite horse colour. One of my first ponies was dapple grey when we got him; over the four to five years we had him he ended up turning completely white.

What’s your favourite equestrian discipline?

To participate in, dressage, but as a spectator I really enjoy watching the cross country phase of eventing and the marathon phase of carriage driving.

What is your equestrian background?

As a child, I always wanted a pony. I started getting riding lessons in a ‘back country’ riding school in New Zealand, then got my first pony when I was eight years old. His name was Hercules. Together we did gymkhanas, jumping – a bit of everything really. Then I moved onto a show pony with whom I also did a bit of eventing and dressage.

I became hooked on dressage and with my dressage horse T.J. competed all the way up to Prix St Georges and CDI-Y young rider classes. During this time, I also dabbled in a bit of eventing with a TB x mare, but dressage was my main focus.

What does your role at EA entail?

I do FEI registrations and passport processing for Australian-based riders, including answering associated queries.

Along with that, I manage administration and day to day operations for participation-level programs including RideAHorse.com.au and interschool level competition.

What’s the coolest thing about your job?

Being involved with the RideAHorse.com.au website and programs. These took a good year to come to fruition from when I first started, and I strongly believe participation is the foundation of our sport.

What problem do you most commonly solve in your role at EA?

The thing I help people with the most is organising FEI registrations and passports. We have recently just launched an online portal for these, which has proven very useful for those wishing to register quickly and easily online (Click Here)

If you could pick a superpower, what would you choose?

On a useful level, I’d like to be able to teleport, so I’d never have to sit in traffic again! But for fun, I’d like to have ‘Matilda’ style powers to move objects with my mind.

If you were an animal, what would you be and why?

Probably a cat. They get to chill out and sleep in the sun all day. It's a pretty good stress-free life.

What is the nerdiest thing you do in your free time?

I love to read, my favourite books are the Harry Potter series. I read them again every few years…I’ve probably read every book six or seven times!
