2018 Barastoc Horse of the Year Show wrap

The 2018 Barastoc Horse of the Year Show incorporates the State Titles for Show horses in Victoria and qualifies winners for the National titles next December.

It’s a show that is unique in many ways. It has a full printed, published history of its first 40 years, which no other Equestrian event in Australia has, and the next ten years will be added when the Golden Anniversary Show is held in February 2019.

It was the first state Horse of the Year Show, back in 1969 and has always been a producer of top horses and riders.

It has created events that have been copied in every state, Newcomer classes for young horses, Show hunter classes and Owner ridden classes.

It was the first to produce artificial floral garlands, and to enforce the use of safety helmets instead of the tradition top hat or bowler.

The 49th Horse of the Year Show showed just how many young riders start their career in the Show Horse discipline and they certainly showed the way last weekend at Werribee Park.

While the youngsters had their own classes, supposedly to create a level playing field, the juniors, some as young as 14,  dominated in the open events with many standing at the top of the line on their own mounts against seasoned professionals.

The youngsters did leave some crumbs for their seniors, with many of the open sashes going their way, and of course the older riders do well on the young, Newcomer classes where a stronger rider is needed.

The Chair of the Equestrian Victoria Show Horse committee Mitch Fox said;

“What a grand spectacle it is when the Show Horse community comes together and competes, to see so many Show Horses at Werribee Park across the three days was truly amazing.”

 “Thank you to all the people who make the event possible - our sponsors, supporters, competitors and volunteers you are all amazing, all your contributions to the event makes it the success it is.”

“We have a busy twelve months of planning Barastoc Horse of the Years 50th anniversary – It is set to be a massive celebratory event so watch this space,” said Fox.
