Aussie reiners finish 5th

An energetic crowed has spurred Australia to a top five finish in the reining team’s event at the FEI World Equestrian Games 2014.

Leading into the event it was the goal of the Australians to improve upon their result at WEG 2010 where they finished in 11th position.

“We’re ecstatic. It was our hope to improve on the result we achieved in Kentucky,” commented Shauna Larcombe, a member of Australia’s team in 2010.

“Back then we were all on borrowed horses but this year there are only two riders on borrowed horses so the rest of us know our horses a little better."

Shauna and her horse La Bigia Sailor were one of two Australian combinations in action on the second day of the team’s event, which also doubled as the first round of qualifying for the individual final.

“I’m very happy. It was a lot of fun. I could hear all the Aussies in the crowd.

“I’m a bit emotional because I love this horse,” she said.

Shauna finished the individual qualification round in 16th position which means she’ll need to compete in the consolation round to book her place in the final. She’ll be joined by Shaun Saunders (Sparkin Tinsel) and John Wicks (Top Flash Cody) who finished 18th and 35th respectively.

Shauna’s brother Martin Larcombe (Wimpeys Cute Tune) progresses straight to the final after finishing in 12th position but unfortuntely for Bill Norwood (Quinberry) his WEG journey ends today after he finished in 32nd position.

“Team Australia is great. We’ve got a great group of people the support staff as well the team member, there’s a lot of camaraderie and it’s been a lot of fun," he said.

The second round of individual qualification continues on Thursday.
