Australian Interschool Championships a Launch Pad to Stardom

One of Australian Eventing’s brightest stars Gemma Tinney is a great example of where competing at National Interschools can lead.

At the Melbourne International Three-Day event in June this year, Gemma represented Australia as a member of the Oceania Championships Young Rider team that was victorious over the New Zealanders.

Gemma says the experience of having been part of the NSW team at Interschools helped her manage the dynamics of a being on the Oceania team.

“The main thing I learnt was being in a team and that has helped me since especially for the Oceania Championships,” Gemma said.

Gemma competed at the Australian Interschool Championships twice. First when she was in Year 6 and then when she was in Year 12.

“It was really fun to do it with friends and have their support in a team riding environment.”

“I thought the standard was good and that was my level at the time as I was only doing 1* eventing back then.”

When Gemma last competed at the Australian Interschool Championships in 2015 she rode her father Stuart’s horse, Carlton, and placed in all her classes.

She says she was impressed by the riding standard and the way in which the events were conducted.

“I think it is so well run and it’s really good to see it getting bigger every year.”

What pleases her most about the Interschools concept is that it’s open to all ages and stages and a prime opportunity to build networks with other passionate and like-minded equestrians.

“There are so many levels which mean even inexperienced kids can do it.”

“It’s a great opportunity to make new friends in your school and in other states as well,” she said.

The 2017 Marcus Oldham Australian Interschool Championships will be held in Toowoomba and begin next Tuesday, September 226 and run through until Friday, September 29.
