Chris Burton wins British Open

Australia’s own Chris Burton has won the British Eventing Open over the weekend.

Riding TS Jamaimo, Burton rose steadily through the ranks from ninth place after showjumping as a dramatic competition unfolded in the Festival’s showpiece class.

New Zealander Jonelle Price, was second on Classic Moet, and Nicola Wilson from North Yorkshire finished third on Beltane Queen.

Chris was quick to offer his commiserations to his compatriot Sam Griffiths, who, as the leader going into cross-country was last on the course but suffered a frustrating fall at fence 21 with Paulank Brockagh.

“I’m very thrilled.  It’s a really great venue and a place that always gets us very excited and to be able to win it is something that I will be very proud of to have in my career.

“Captain Mark Phillips has changed the course a bit this year and I think it’s certainly made it tougher.  It looks like it’s made the time hard to make - a few more drop fences which is perhaps a bit more taxing on them. But it’s a nice course to ride and all the beautiful fences are beautifully built and so when you have a nice ride like that you feel happy that you’ve done it,” said Burton.

It was their best result since Chris took the horse on as a chance ride at the Adelaide four-star in 2013 after which a syndicate of owners clubbed together to buy the horse for him.

A Rio hopeful, Burton will now turn his attention to FEI Nations Cup in Aachen where he will join team mates Andrew Hoy, Paul Tapner and Kevin McNab http://www.equestrian.org.au/news/australian-team-aachen-fei-eventing-nations-cup
