Pony Rides was one of the activities on offer

First Ready Set Trot Expo hailed a success

More than 120 young people flocked to the Werribee Park Equestrian Centre on Tuesday to participate in the first Ready Set Trot School Holiday Expo.

The Expo offered young people an opportunity to come and try elements of the Ready Set Trot program – an introductory equestrian program for children who love horses but may not have access to a horse of their own.

While there was plenty to keep the children entertained, a key focus of Ready Set Trot is on increasing a young person’s knowledge of horses, and the various activities on offer at the Expo provided ample fun learning opportunities for participants.

A grooming station gave young people an opportunity to brush a horse while stable tours provided a chance to learn about horse equipment and horse feed. The Standardbred horse 'Hulk' was popular with children who got a chance to feed and pat him.

Children could get active by playing games from the Ready Set Trot Playground Skills program, which gives traditional school yard games a horse theme. One of the games, Equestrian Race, uses skipping ropes to replicate horse reins and allows children to gain an understanding of how a rider communicates with a horse.

There was an arts and craft station which allowed children to get creative and participants received a free pony ride from an accredited Ready Set Trot delivery centre.  Ready Set Trot mascot Gee Gee also made a special appearance.

Equestrian Australia Coach, Diane Lucas, of the accredited centre Broadway Park explained the benefit of the Expo.

“The Expo is a great opportunity for young people to get a taste of the Ready Set Trot program.

“The format is a good fit for accredited centres who want to promote and recruit for their Ready Set Trot programs within their local community.”

With the first Ready Set Trot Expo reaching its capacity within a week  of registrations opening, plans are already underway to host future School Holiday events.
