The history of the Greater Sydney Jumping World Cup CSI1*-W

This equestrian event draws jumping horses and riders from all over Australia. It takes place at the Sydney International Equestrian Centre in Horsley Park - the venue of the Sydney 2000 Olympic Games. It is one of the few Australian World Cup Jumping shows that is held indoors, giving horses and riders an opportunity to experience competing in this environment.

May 2009:The Weekend of World Cups brought together two prominent events in their own right - a round of the Australian League of the FEI World Cup Jumping series and an FEI World Cup Eventing qualifier. For three years these events ran side by side, with the traditional Sydney three day event CCIe* being held at the same venue in September. Former EA Chairman Paul Cargill was a key instigator in the starting of this event as he was President of Sydney International Eventing Committee at the time.

April 2012:The Greater Sydney Grand Prix is held for the first time in conjunction with the Sydney International Three Day Event CCI3*. The change is prompted by the FEI announcement that the World Cup Eventing series would not continue. An enthusiastic organising committee, committed to preserving the tradition of eventing and jumping on the same weekend, continues to run the Greater Sydney Grand Prix in conjunction with the Sydney CCI3*. The Grand Prix class is always held on the Sunday with a warm-up class at 1.45m taking place on the Saturday. Some horses will jump the 1.40m class on Friday to give their horses an outing in the indoor before the main event, while others opt to save their horses for the Sunday.

The inaugural Greater Sydney World Cup was won by the eventual winner of the 2009 Australian League, Chris Chugg and Vivant. In winning the series the combination earned a start in the 2010 FEI World Cup Final in Sweden and the pair on to represent Australia at the 2010 FEI World Equestrian Games.

The event is organised by Sydney International Eventing – The Committee is a dedicated group of volunteers, many of whom were volunteers at the Sydney 2000 Olympics and have a strong attachment to the venue and ensuring it is continued to be used for international equestrian competitions. Event Director Rose Read has been involved in the event since the Sydney 2000 Olympic Games and took on the role of Director in 2011.
