ELIZABETH Sobecki is battling multiple sclerosis and a degenerative bone disease, and her mother, her trainer and her friend are staring down cancer.

But these difficulties do not keep the Lobethal 21-year-old out of the saddle. Her courage in the face of adversity has earned her a nomination in the Courage category in this year's Pride of Australia Awards.

"Elizabeth continues to rise above all of this, maintaining a positive and vivacious attitude to her own illness and determined not to let MS stop her dreams," her mother Annie, who was diagnosed with bowel cancer in 2009, said.

Miss Sobecki was the reserve in the Australian Paralympic Equestrian Team last year.
