Podium result for Rio bound Williams

Olympian Matt Williams capped off a milestone week with a podium result at the $130,000 Tyron (USA) CSI3* Grand Prix.

Earlier in the week Williams earned selection to his third consecutive Australian Olympic Team with the horse Valinski S and overnight he added another strong result to his recent list of outstanding performances which helped the US based Jumping rider secure a ticket to Rio.

The 31 year old and his Rio 2016 selected horse finished second in the lucrative North Carolina event after producing two clean jumping rounds. They were one of four combinations to progress to a jump-off in which they picked up one time penalty which saw them secure a second overall ranking, finishing behind Sharn Wordley (Casper) who finished on zero penalties.

Williams said it was goal to produce clean jumping across the weekend.

“Valinski jumped clear in all five rounds he jumped this past week which has been my main goal even more so than trying to win," he said.

"His fitness is back where I want it and we will do one more show now in two weeks and then it's time for Rio, hopefully we can keep up the form."

Williams' team mate in Rio, Scott Keach finished 13th in the same event with his Rio selected horse Fedor.
