Shane Rose
Shane has two sisters and one brother, all older than Shane. All the Rose kids rode from a very young age and went to Pony Club. Shane started riding at Forest Hills Pony Club in New South Wales at the age of five, taking part in everything from mounted games to Eventing. He learnt to walk, trot, canter and jump with his own shetland pony Mickey Mouse and won his first blue ribbon on Tinker. Co-incidentally Rose's family gave two-time Olympian Edwina Tops-Alexander one of her first ponies called Brandy, after all four Rose children outgrew him. Shane settled on the equestrian discipline of Eventing and quickly progressed through the ranks.
In 1994, when he was 21, he realised his first goal, representing Australia in the Young Rider Trans Tasman competition with Mr Joe Cool. They won both the NZ Young Rider One & Three Day championships and the team won the Young Rider Trans Taman trophy for the first time.
He was selected for the Australian team (which went on to win gold at the Atlanta 1996 Olympic Games) but an injury upon arrival in America meant he was unable to compete.
In 1998, Shane went to Rome with It’s A Knockout (Josh) and rode at the World Equestrian Games (WEG) as a member of the Australian team.
In 2003 he opened an equestrian facility called Bimbadeen Park with his wife Niki (an eventing rider also) in Werombi, NSW, Australia, breaking and pre-training racehorses. They have two children Olivia and Harry. Rose exemplifies perseverance and resilience having also overcome throat cancer and a horse kick to the head which put him in a coma for a short period.
In 2008, Shane and his horse All Lucky were selected for the Beijing Olympic Games and claimed silver as part of the Australian team.
Since then, Shane has been selected to ride in another two Australian teams, firstly at the 2012 London Olympics with Taurus and then again at the 2014 World Equestrian Games in Normandy, France. The team successfully qualified Australia a place at the 2016 Rio Olympic Games, and along the way proved that Australian riders really are the best cross country riders in the world after Australia was the only country to have all its riders home safe and clear cross country. The rider that inspires him is Stuart Tinney with whom he competed in the same team during WEG 2014. We hope that Shane's mojo "the harder you work, the more luck you get" will work as he is now working towards Taupo, Melbourne CCI3* and Adelaide CCI4* and qualifying his team of top horses, including CP Qualified and Virgil, for the 2016 Rio Olympic Games, with the ultimate goal of once again representing his country. #RoadtoRio #GoAUS
