Staff Profile - Alison Alcock

Each month we introduce you to a member of the EA team. It's fun, a little bit serious and maybe more interesting than you’d expect...

Introducing Equestrian Australia team member

Alison Alcock

Performance Support Manager

What does your role entail?

I coordinate Sport Science and Medicine services for the High Performance program, to help the human athletes be in their best condition and ready to perform. I also do performance analysis and within competition analysis, and any research or innovation projects for the High Performance program.

What’s the problem you most commonly solve in your role?

Every day is different but one question I do get quite often is from athletes wondering if they are allowed to take a certain medication and whether they need a Therapeutic Use Exemption (and if so, how do they get one!)

If you could pick a superpower, what would you choose?

Teleportation – so I could visit a new place every day, go for a quick ski in the rocky mountains, swim in the ocean, ride my bike on back country lanes, and meet friends and family that live far away for lunch whenever I wanted!

What’s your favourite horse breed and horse colour?

...

What’s your favourite equestrian discipline?

Eventing

What’s the coolest thing about your job?

Working with passionate people whose goal is to be the best in the world.

What is your equestrian background?

I’m not sure you would call it an “equestrian background” but I grew up on a farm in the UK and we had a pony that I used to ride and she loved to jump and hack around the farm.

We also had several pet donkeys – one night, two donkeys escaped and someone reported them to the police who took them to the local prison as that was the only secure place they had for them. My dad literally had to go and bail them out of jail!

If you were an animal, what would you be and why?

A dog – golden retriever or border collie. They like to keep busy and be helpful, but they always seem to be chilled out and happy.

What is the nerdiest thing you do in your free time?

Watch Grand Designs and adventure documentaries.
