Australian Team Tops the Medal Tally at Virtus Global Games in Equestrian

The Australian Team was the most successful team in Equestrian at the 6^th Virtus Global Games held in Vichy, France this week. They performed outstandingly to win not only the Team gold medal, but also two gold and one silver medal in individual events.

The Australians knew it was always going to be a gigantic challenge for the three Aussie riders as they were having to ride borrowed horses.

In this sport the unique connection and understanding between rider and horse is key. The Aussies had to create that magical relationship over two days! But the three riders, Andrew Driffield, Sarah Sherwood and Sui Watts, never doubted that wonderful “have a go” attitude.

The first day of competition started on a great note, with the Australian riders Andrew Driffield, Sarah Sherwood and Sui Watts winning the Team gold medal ahead of Spain and France.

In the individual events the following day, Sui Watts riding Bonni won a gold medal in the Grade IV Novice A - II2 division, Andrew Driffield won a gold in the Grade IV Novice A - II1 riding Volpino, and Sarah Sherwood won a silver medal in the Grade IV Novice A - II1, also riding Bonni.

Amazingly, this was all done on borrowed horses, whereas the other medal-winning teams were riding their own horses. 

Head of the Australian team, Robyn Smith says, “Twenty years in the making – it was so emotional so see Australia competing for the first time. Andrew Driffield dreamed of doing this his whole riding life and it has finally come to fruition at 49.” Australia opened its campaign in the Dressage competition with riders, Andrew riding Volpino and Sarah Sherwood and Sui Watts sharing Bonni. Both had such excellent rides, although there was strong competition from the experienced Spanish riders, that they were never going to accept less than gold. Coach Mary Longden was overwhelmed with the riders’ success. “This result is a tribute to the years of lobbying for equity of opportunity. It is a very emotional and indeed satisfying moment for Australian sport.”
