Hendra Working Group Recommendations now available

Equestrian Australia’s Hendra Working Group has presented its report to the EA National Board who now invites feedback on the recommendations.

Hendra Working Group Recommendations

Equestrian Australia Chair Judy Fasher said that the board was appreciative of the work completed by the panel and now invites members and stakeholders to provide their feedback on the recommendations.

“Member and stakeholder feedback has played an important role throughout this review and the board is eager to continue with this approach. We encourage all members and stakeholders to review the recommendations and provide their feedback.

“In accordance with previous undertakings given to all members and organising committees the EA board wishes to make it clear that there is no EA Hendra Vaccination policy. No further action will be taken by the EA Board before there has been full consultation with all members and stakeholders.

“It is important that the solution is in the best interests of all members and the recommendations offered by the panel are a good first step but we now need to hear from the members before any decisions are made,” said Mrs Fasher.

EA will also be seeking feedback from each of its State Branches.

Members who wish to provide feedback on the recommendations should use the online form, available via the link below. Feedback may be submitted up until 15 February 2016 at which point it will be provided to the Board for consideration.

Meantime Equestrian Australia has been advised by the Australian Competition and Consumer Commission (ACCC) that it will permit the continuation of a notification lodged by EA allowing event organising committees to require Hendra vaccination as a condition of entry.

What does this mean for event organising committees?

EA Organising Committees may choose to require horses attending their event be vaccinated for Hendra.

It is not compulsory for event organising committees to enforce Hendra vaccination as a condition of entry – the decision to apply Hendra vaccination requirements as a condition of entry rests with the event organising committee. In making this decision EA recommends organising committees complete a biosecurity risk self-assessment and in consultation with their appointed vet agree on the biosecurity requirements that best meet the needs of their event. For more answers to FAQs please click HERE
