Changes to Working with Children Clearance for Coaches

Over the past few months, Equestrian Australia (EA) has been reviewing the requirements of the Working with Children Clearance/Check across the country as well as seeking further advice from the Australian Sports Commission and the state government service departments.

As a result, from October 1st 2017 we will now replace the compulsory Working with Children Clearance/Check with the following question as part of the coach renewal process:

Do you work with children under the age of 18yrs?
  • YES
  • NO

If you select ‘YES’, you will be expected to provide the appropriate Working with Children Clearance/Check information and attach a copy of the document.

Also as part of the coaching declaration, there will be an additional sentence added to the effect of “By not including an appropriate Working with Children Clearance/Check I acknowledge that I do not work with children and I will not coach anyone under the age of 18 during this renewal period.”

Please be aware that if you do not provide an appropriate Working with Children Clearance/Check and you do have contact with children while coaching, you will not be covered by Equestrian Australia’s coaching insurance provided by Gow Gates.

As a recommendation, EA suggests that you do get an appropriate Working with Children Clearance/Check.

It is an easy process to follow and provides additional support when you may have exposure to such a vulnerable group.
