Birthday girl Judith Dierks wins the Grand Prix Freestyle with Diamond Star

The 2015 edition of the Sydney CDI is closed for another year. The ever-popular Grand Prix Freestyle offered another moment of emotion but also a lot of suspense this year to the crowded stands and crowned the birthday girl Judith Dierks and her stunning Diamond Star (72.77%). The young Bavarian gelding astonished his rider : “I was happy and surprised event to get third in Thursday’s Grand Prix because he’s just started at this level and it was already amazing for me and then to win it tonight, I can’t believe it. I was thinking if I just keep my placement I would be happy so now I am just ecstatic”.

In the first part of the competition, the rider from New-Zealand John Thompson offered an enthusiastic performance with his Hanoverian gelding Bates Antonello, the public cheering and clapping his final passage-piaffe and obtained 68.70%.

After the break, Maree Tomkinson from Victoria, opened the leader board over 69% with a good ride on her 13 years old mare Diamantina IV, with a score of 69.30%.

But that was forgetting the next rider, 6 times winner of the GP Freestyle, Heath Ryan, winner last year with his famous stallion Regardez Moi and with who he scored 69.40%, taking the provisional first place.

The next to enter the arena, third rider from New-Zealand taking part in the competition, was Julie Brougham on Vom Feinsten. The Palmerston North based rider and her 2015 horse of the year crowned gelding proposed a very enchanting program with 69.37%.

The competition was starting to get very tight at the top of the leader board when Katharine Farrell and her imported Arabian Warmblood/Hanoverian Luxor 118 stared their test. And it is with no pressure and a lot of elegance that the couple obtained the first place of the provisional leader board with a smart 70.25%.

Tonight’s incredible suspense didn’t stop after Mary Hanna’s passage. Thanks to a very high 72.55% score with her 14 years old Dutch warmblood gelding Umbro (by Jazz x Juventus) she was placed first at the provisional, overtaking Katharine.

Judith and Diamond were second to last. At that point, everyone assisting to the show was wondering how the competition level could get any better with all the incredible scores and thrilling freestyle tests. Judith Dierks, whose birthday was today received an incredible birthday present by her still very young (9 years old) and very promising Diamond Star, owned by Vicki Newham. They scored 72.77%, jumping over Mary Hanna on the first step. “He was so good. We not always reliable with our changes yet and he actually got them which was already a bonus, so I was happy anyway, but to win it was amazing! I am very pleased, he is a wonderful horse”.

Last to go, Brett Parbery and DP Weltmieser, after winning the Grand Prix and the Grand Prix Special these last days, finishes third tonight with 70.15%.
