Sam Williams wins the Melbourne WC Qualifier

Sam Williams has beaten a strong field to win the Melbourne WC Qualifer.

Brother of Olympian Matt Williams, Sam and his 10 yo gelding High Rail Saltbuh were the only combination to jump clear in the first round. They picked up four jumping penalties in the second round but it didn't change their positioning on the leaderboard with second placed Jamie Kermond and Valhalla 3 ending the event on a total of 12 jumping penalties (four from round one and eight from round two).

The David Sheppard designed course proved a challenging one with third placed Brook Dobbin and Advisor the only other combination to produce a clear round, which they achieved in the second session. The 12 jumping penalties they gained in the first round relegated them to third position overall.

Following this event the top 15 positioned riders on the leaderboard of the Australian league of the FEI World Cup automatically qualify for this year's Equestrian Grand Final which will be held at EQUITANA in Melbourne. View the standingsHERE
